The Galaxy opens its season Saturday night facing the rival that knocked them out of the playoffs last year: Real Salt Lake. But the Galaxy will field a markedly different team at the StubHub Center after bolstering its ranks with several experienced players during the off-season. The moves were to correct the team's uneven play in 2013. "If there was a weakness last year, it's that we were inconsistent," said Coach Bruce Arena, who last month signed a multiyear contract extension.

Playing without their two top scorers for the fourth straight match, there had to be some question as to whether the Galaxy could keep producing goals Saturday against the Houston Dynamo. And that question persisted for nearly a minute until Jovan Kirovski scored on a header, starting the Galaxy on its way to a relatively easy 4-1 victory in front of 20,826 at the Home Depot Center. Kirovski scored off a crossing pass from the right side by Sean Franklin in the game's first minute.

After more than a dozen failed corner kicks, it was a blocked free kick that brought the Galaxy a 1-0 victory Wednesday night against the Columbus Crew. Galaxy midfielder David Beckham had attempted 14 corner kicks, all falling harmlessly, and a handful of free kicks before he was fouled in the 68th minute. From about 25 yards out, Beckham blasted the ensuing free kick off the wall of Columbus defenders in front of him. The ricochet bounced directly to Galaxy defender Sean Franklin, a few yards to Beckham's left.

It wasn't a must-win situation and yet for the full 90 minutes the Galaxy played with the desperation and intensity of a team facing playoff elimination in Saturday night's Western Conference showdown with league-leading Real Salt Lake. The result was a 4-2 victory that boosted the reigning Major League Soccer champions from fifth to fourth place in the standings in front of a noisy 24,237 at StubHub Center in Carson. The first thing to go was the pitcher's mound, which was shrouded in black cloth before being jackhammered into fine dust. Then came the infield, with the grounds crew digging deep into the dirt to create trenches running from foul line to foul line, and filling them in with sod and covering it with grass. By early Friday morning the transformation was complete and the field at Dodger Stadium, among the most handsome and stately in baseball, had become a soccer pitch. In its 51-year history, Dodger Stadium has welcomed the Beatles and the Harlem Globetrotters.

All eyes were on the fluorescent green shoes of Landon Donovan, and the Galaxy star made the most of his initial start at Home Depot Center this season, scoring the second goal and assisting on the first in Saturday night's 2-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City. Even before the opening kickoff the near-capacity crowd of 25,908 broke into a chant and Donovan, the third-highest scorer in Major League Soccer history, gave the fans plenty to cheer after seeming a step slow against FC Dallas one week earlier in his first MLS start.
