Gift cards are popular stocking stuffers because they take some of the guesswork out of gift giving but still seem more thoughtful than slipping cash into an envelope. From Home Depot to Best Buy to Nordstrom, retailers offer a card for nearly every occasion and person. But an Internet company says it's tapping an overlooked market with a one-of-a-kind card to appeal to shoppers interested in a different kind of giving. Causes, which helps donors link up with charities online, has teamed up with gift card marketer Blackhawk Network to sell $25 and $50 prepaid gift cards in 800 Safeway and Vons supermarkets in California.

Narbonne High School football coach Manuel Douglas gathered his varsity team Tuesday morning to talk about losing their teammate Dannie Farber Jr. He said the last time he spoke with Farber was Thursday, when he was escorting a Michigan football scout out of the school. In the hall, Farber took his hand and pulled him, as if wanting to speak with him. "I said, 'Hold on, I'll be back,' " Douglas recalled. When Douglas returned a few minutes later, Farber was gone.

The subject of women's rights in the Middle East is contentious. Sensational media coverage of honor killings and child brides equates religious conservatism with gender inequality, incensing Western feminists on the one hand and provoking regional backlashes on the other. The reality is far more nuanced, according to the 2009 Global Gender Gap Report released in late October by the World Economic Forum, which ranks countries based on women's economic participation, educational attainment, health and political empowerment.

Deborah Luebke-Montgomery, 28, has pageant fever. She has won 40 of the 60 beauty pageants she's entered, including Miss Orange County and Miss San Diego County, and she just won Miss Toyota Grand Prix to reign over the Long Beach Grand Prix from Friday through next Sunday. "My beauty pageant experience helped me win this one," said Montgomery, who was first runner-up with her mother, Bonnie Luebke, 52, of Anaheim Hills, in the 1985 Miss and Mrs. America pageant in Florida.

Members of the Cal State Northridge men's volleyball team had better not get used to sleeping in late during Christmas vacation. CSUN Coach John Price has scheduled early morning workouts in preparation for the upcoming season. The Matadors will practice at 6 a.m. daily and again at 1 p.m. beginning Jan. 4. "It just means that they're going to have to cut down on their night life," Price said. "We need to focus on volleyball now and everything else can come later."

Despite losing two fumbles that led to touchdowns, Los Angeles Dorsey defeated host Woodland Hills Taft, 24-20, Wednesday night in a City Section Division I playoff quarterfinal by making key defensive stops. As a result, the 12th-seeded Dons advanced to next week's semifinal against Coliseum League rival Crenshaw. The top-seeded Cougars defeated Westchester, 55-0, in a quarterfinal and also handed Dorsey a 44-7 loss in the regular season. "We got the momentum up," Dorsey sophomore defensive lineman Jordon Simmons said.

This is the eighth in a series of stories on the top high school football players in the Southland by position. Today: defensive backs. What goes up in the vicinity of Dion Bailey usually comes down to his liking. The Lakewood High safety intercepted nine passes as a junior, putting him among the leaders in California. Three interceptions came against Long Beach Millikan, including one when Bailey saved a touchdown by leaping at the last moment to take the ball away from its intended target.

Running backs Malcolm Jones, Westlake Village Oaks Christian, 6-0, 217, Sr.: Surpassed Marc Tyler's single-season school rushing record with 2,477 yards and 40 touchdowns.
