"The Killing," the cop series that wouldn't stay dead, will return for its final season on Netflix on Aug. 1. For those who remain skeptical, this is really the end. The series, which began on AMC in 2011, stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman as Seattle homicide detectives whose lives play second fiddle to their all-consuming murder investigations that span entire seasons.  "The Killing" was canceled after its second season, but Fox Television...

Season premieres for ABC's "My Wife and Kids" and NBC's "The West Wing" and "Law & Order" scored solidly with viewers Wednesday, while the evening's only new show, CBS' "The Brotherhood of Poland, N.H." stumbled badly out of the gate. An hourlong episode of "My Wife and Kids" beat the season premieres of CBS' "60 Minutes II" and NBC"s "Ed" during the 8 p.m. time period. The return of "The West Wing" at 9 p.m. attracted more than 17.

HBO has spent years looking for another hit like "The Sopranos," and it may have found it in "Game of Thrones. " Season 4 of the epic fantasy opened at 9 p.m. Sunday night averaging 6.6 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. Those are the best numbers for HBO since 2007, when the mob drama "Sopranos" ended with 11.9 million viewers. TNT can still round up a big audience for its summer shows, but the season premieres of "The Closer" and "Raising the Bar" hint at the first signs of viewer fatigue. "The Closer," the network's hit crime drama with Kyra Sedgwick, opened its fifth season Monday with an average of 7.1 million viewers, according to early data from Nielsen Media Research. That's the largest audience for a scripted show on basic cable so far this year. But it's also down 9% from the series' Season 4 premiere last July and the worst performance for any "Closer" season opener since the year the show launched, 2005.

Given that Fox's new high school show, "Glee," has already attracted a cult following, there was considerable speculation about how it would do in its official premiere Wednesday night. Turns out the show passed a key audition, but it's still too soon to tell its ultimate fate. "Glee" attracted 7.3 million viewers and won its time slot among adults ages 18 to 49, according to early data from Nielsen Media Research. That put "Glee" -- a kind of cross between "High School Musical" and "Freaks and Geeks" -- a strong No. 2 to NBC's "America's Got Talent" (9.7 million viewers)

"Breaking Bad's" final season premieres July 15, but the show is getting a special premiere event July 14 in San Diego during the Comic-Con International. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will both be in attendance, along with most of the show's supporting cast, including Anna Gunn, Jonathan Banks, Dean Norris, Bob Odenkirk and Betsy Brandt. (Basically, anyone in the cast who didn't have half his face blown off last season.) While the world of meth dealers and warring drug cartels may seem a little gritty and unusual for the normally fantasy-tinged genre material of Comic-Con, series creator Vince Gilligan has shown an affinity for costume colorations that would do any comic book writer proud.

Could “Dancing With the Stars” finally be losing its luster? Monday's premiere of the long-running ABC competition series was down 32% from last year - and all this despite months of heavy promotion and an “all star” cast including Bristol Palin and Pamela Anderson. It also finished well behind NBC's younger-skewing “The Voice” in key demographics, but the news for “Dancing” wasn't all bad: The show drew 14.6 million total viewers, versus 11.9 million for “The Voice,” easily making it Monday's top entertainment draw.

The official start date of the fall TV season is still two weeks away, but some networks are jumping the gun in the hopes of grabbing some early momentum before the airwaves are filled with new shows and viewers are struggling to figure out what to watch and what to ignore. Tonight, NBC premieres the third season of its singing competition show "The Voice" along with a sneak preview of its new Ryan Murphy sitcom "The New Normal. " On Wednesday, Fox will debut its revamped version of "The X Factor" with new judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato and on Thursday "Glee" is back in its new Thursday time slot.

Season 4 of HBO's hit series "Game of Thrones" gets underway Sunday, but it's not the kind of show anyone should undertake lightly. For the full "Game of Thrones" effect, HBO is doing its best to simultaneously keep you informed and take away all your free time by way of a weekend-long marathon of the show's first three seasons. Beginning Friday morning at 9 a.m. Pacific, HBO2 will air all 30 episodes of the series twice, in the run-up to Sunday night's Season 4 premiere. Yes, this is the age of readily available DVDs and HBO Go, but there's something so convenient about telling people, "Don't talk to me now!

The 12th season of Gordon Ramsay's "Hell's Kitchen" on Fox premiered with ratings that were generally in line with last year's opener, according to early numbers from Nielsen. The culinary boot camp reality series kicked off with an average of 5.3 million viewers, up slightly from last year, though it was down 5% among key 18- to 49-year-olds. Fox's long-running "American Idol" continued to show its age with the ratings from its season premiere Wednesday night. The 13th season opener of "American Idol" drew an average 15.2 million viewers overall and earned a rating of 4.7 among key 18- to 49-year-olds. That's down 15% in total viewership compared with last year's premiere, and a drop of 22% in the young-adults demographic, continuing a downward trend since the show's premiere peak in 2007. The network is hoping to revamp the show's tone  and regain some of the fans it lost during the last season, which was largely marred by the animosity between superstars  Nicki Minaj  and  Mariah Carey .  The singing competition fell to a season average of 13.2 million viewers last year, down 23% from 2012.

Not even Harry Connick Jr. could save "American Idol" from another disappointing season opener. Wednesday saw the season 13 premiere of Fox's singing sensation with crooner Connick added to the judging panel, along with Keith Urban and a returning Jennifer Lopez, who took last season off. But fewer viewers came along for the ride. "Idol" drew 15.2 million viewers, down 15% compared with last year's premiere and the lowest regular-season launch ever for "Idol. " (The season 1 premiere drew just under 10 million, but it aired in June 2002, outside of the September through May TV season.)

The Season 4 premiere of "Downton Abbey" has forced PBS to throw out its old record books. Sunday's episode of the costume drama set in 1920s Britain became the most-watched PBS drama premiere of all time, with a total audience of 10.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen. That was up 22% over the Season 3 premiere last year, itself a record for PBS, which typically sees ratings that are a fraction of those of other broadcast networks. Fan interest for the fourth season has been at a high since last season ended with the unexpected death of the popular "Downton" scion Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens)

The fifth season of "Community" begins Thursday on NBC, with the return of creator and show runner Dan Harmon, absent from his own show - he was fired - in Season 4. Writer-producer Chris McKenna has also returned; the pair shares credit for the opening episode, "Repilot," which will be immediately followed by a second episode, "Introduction to Teaching. " Indeed, there may have been some thought in the upper reaches of NBC that the series could be tweaked to attract viewers who might have found forbidding its barbed mesh of meta-humor, pop-cultural references, parody and reality shifts.

I had some really great examples, including Jenny Bicks on "Men in Trees" and John Wells on "ER. " It was great to see those different styles of running a show.

"Scandal" is back -- with its highest ratings yet.  ABC's political thriller starring Kerry Washington as a Beltway crisis manager returned for Season 3 Thursday with a series-best 10.5 million total viewers, according to Nielsen.  Maybe more important, the season premiere easily won its 10 p.m. time slot and was the second best-rated program of the night -- surpassed only by CBS' sitcom smash "The Big Bang Theory.
