Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders have come up with a novel way of determining whether to keep a general manager each season. Ask the fans to vote. That is what the Sounders did, asking their season-ticket holders and members of "The Alliance," the official fan club of the Sounders, to vote on whether to retain General Manager Adrian Hanauer. Thursday night, comedian Drew Carey, a part owner of the team, announced that 96% of the 13,775 votes cast were to retain Hanauer.

Zach Thornton shut out the Seattle Sounders for the third straight time, helping Chivas USA to a scoreless tie Saturday. Thornton earned his 10th shutout to snap a tie with Houston's Pat Onstad for the MLS lead. Both teams earned a point to keep them in the playoff mix. Seattle is 9-6-11 with 38 points, while Chivas stayed one point behind at 11-9-4. Thornton beat the Sounders 2-0 and 1-0 earlier this season, and had to work for his third clean sheet. In the 15th minute, he got his hand on a shot by Sebastien Le Toux from the top of the 6-yard box to deflect it wide of the far post.

Clint Dempsey may be coming back to Major League Soccer. Or not. In the last 24 hours rumors have been flying that the U.S. national team captain could soon leave Tottenham Hotspur for the Seattle Sounders, who could welcome him to the team as early as Saturday. Other rumors say he'll stay in the English Premier League but jump to Everton. ESPN, citing two sources with the Sounders, said a transfer deal with Tottenham is being finalized. Seattle appeared to lay the groundwork for the transfer by signing Shalrie Joseph to a new contract, opening up a designated player spot in the process.

Chivas today AT SEATTLE When: 1. Where: CenturyLink Field, Seattle. On the air: TV: KWHY, Prime Ticket. Records: Chivas USA 7-11-7, Seattle 12-6-8. Record vs. Seattle: 0-1-1. Update: Three weeks ago Chivas USA was in the Western Conference playoff chase. But after going winless in its last five matches - during which it has been outscored 18-6 - the team is nine points out of the postseason picture and just a point out of the conference cellar with nine matches to go. If the team is to have any hope of turning that around, it will have to start Saturday against a Seattle Sounders team that has not only lost just once in 12 home matches this season but also routed Chivas, 6-2, two weeks ago at the Home Depot Center.

The glass soccer boot finally proved too tight for Cal FC, which saw its Cinderella run through the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup end in a 5-0 loss to Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders on Tuesday in Tukwila, Wash. The fourth-round win sends the three-time defending champion Sounders on to the quarterfinals, joining Chivas USA, which beat the NASL's Carolina RailHawks, 2-1, in Cary, N.C. Juan Pablo Angel's penalty-kick goal in stoppage time proved decisive for Chivas. The match appeared headed for overtime when Carolina defender Gale Agbossoumonde was called for a hand ball after deflecting the ball with his arm while on the ground.

Landon Donovan is tired. While his Galaxy teammates had a three-week break, Donovan was scoring three goals for the U.S. national team at the World Cup. Then, while the rest of that team returned home, Donovan stopped in New York City to make five television appearances in two days. Now, the Galaxy's star forward has little time to prepare for Sunday's home game against Seattle, in which he hopes to play despite a strained hamstring and barely any practice after returning to Los Angeles on Thursday.

The Galaxy hadn't even left the field after Sunday's 3-0 playoff victory over the Seattle Sounders before the PA announcer informed the sellout crowd that tickets to next month's MLS Cup final at the Home Depot Center would soon go on sale. The Galaxy has a long way to go before it can think about playing in Major League Soccer's title game, much less playing it at home. But it certainly looked like a championship team in the first game of the Western Conference final, wrapping two goals from Robbie Keane around a second-half score from Mike Magee to take a commanding lead in the series.

Landon Donovan doesn't know how many minutes he'll be able to play for the Galaxy on Sunday at the Home Depot Center. But he does know every one he does play will be excruciating. "It is what it is," Donovan said of the bone bruise and torn posterior cruciate ligament that has left his left knee aching. "A lot of guys are dealing with a lot of pain right now. " But a lot of guys aren't as important to their teams as Donovan is to the Galaxy, which plays host to the Seattle Sounders at 6 p.m. in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Chivas USA's postseason chances may have gone from longshot to no shot Saturday at the Home Depot Center, and not simply because their loss to the Seattle Sounders left them at them 10 points out of the final playoff berth with 11 games to play. It was more how they lost: by giving up a franchise-record six goals in a 6-2 pummeling. And just to make sure everyone got the message, Chivas scored Seattle's final goal itself, with veteran defender Ante Jazic redirecting a pass around keeper Dan Kennedy in stoppage time.
