SeaWorld Orlando has announced a multi-year plan to add a 3-D movie, a swim-with-sea-life attraction and a new themed land in an effort to counter increasing competition in Florida's crowded theme park marketplace. The largest and most expensive expansion in the marine park's 38-year history comes on the heels of the successful debuts of Universal Orlando's Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010 and Legoland Florida in 2011. During that same period, Walt Disney World announced plans to open a Fantasyland makeover at the Magic Kingdom starting in 2012 and Avatar Land at Disney's Animal Kingdom starting in 2015.

Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite's riveting documentary "Blackfish" tells the story of Tilikum, an aggressive bull orca who has lived the last 30 years in captivity. The film's central debate circles around what exactly caused the whale's behavior linking him to the deaths of three people over the years - natural aggression or the trauma and boredom of captivity? With the death of SeaWorld Orlando trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010, Cowperthwaite felt compelled to investigate. Through interviews with experts and former SeaWorld trainers, and footage of the animals in the wild and in captivity, the filmmaker puts forth a compelling case for leaving orcas in the wild.

A SeaWorld Orlando animal trainer died Wednesday from "multiple traumatic injuries and drowning" after a killer whale pulled her underwater by her long ponytail near the theme park's Shamu Stadium, authorities said Thursday. Dawn Brancheau, 40, was "interacting" with the killer whale in knee-deep water "when the animal grabbed her by the hair, said to be in a long ponytail, and pulled her underwater," according to a statement from the Orange County Sheriff's Office. "Rescuers were not able to immediately jump in and render assistance" to Brancheau because of the orca's "aggressive nature."

Attendance at SeaWorld parks across the country has dropped 6% in the first half of the year, but is the decline due to bad publicity or bad weather? SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. has endured some harsh publicity lately with the debut this summer of "Blackfish," a documentary about the mistreatment of orca whales in captivity, particularly at SeaWorld Orlando in Florida. In its latest financial report, SeaWorld Entertainment reported attendance of 10.1 million in its 11 parks in the first half of the year, down from 10.7 million in the same period in 2012.

A naked man found dead on the back of a killer whale in a tank at SeaWorld Orlando in Florida was a drifter who apparently drowned after going for a swim, police said. The dead man was identified as Daniel Dukes, 27, who had listed his address as a Hare Krishna Temple in Miami. An autopsy was expected to show he drowned. "There was no foul play or anything sinister on his part," an Orange County sheriff's spokesman said.

I was overjoyed when I first heard SeaWorld San Diego was going to build an Aquatica water park. The original Aquatica at SeaWorld Orlando in Florida was an instant success, setting a new standard for excellence and excess in the water park industry when it opened in 2008. Today, Aquatica Orlando's combination of one-of-a-kind water slides and up-close animal interactions attracts 1.5 million visitors per year, making it one of the Top 10 water parks in the world . Photos: SeaWorld San Diego's Aquatica water park After a preview visit on Thursday, it pains me to say all Aquaticas are not created equal.

A naked man was found dead Tuesday morning on the back of a killer whale in a tank at SeaWorld Orlando, apparently after remaining in the Florida theme park after closing time, police said. "The man was found nude on the whale's back," said Jim Solomons, spokesman for the Orange County sheriff's office. "There was no obvious trauma--he wasn't bitten or chewed up or anything." Investigators said an autopsy would determine the cause of death, and drowning was considered a strong possibility.

Five pilot whales are expected to survive after a 22-member whale pod stranded itself at Avalon Beach State Park on Florida's eastern coast this weekend. The sudden, unexplained stranding brought an army of volunteers who tried to keep the whales hydrated and upright Saturday. Residents covered the beached whales with towels and drenched them with buckets of water, ultimately to little avail. “I got down there to snap a few pictures but only took a handful before I threw the camera down and jumped in,” one volunteer, Waldo Waldie, wrote in a Facebook album with photos of the effort.

For now, video and photos that depict the death of a SeaWorld Orlando trainer during an encounter with a killer whale will remain out of the public's eye. But the media and attorneys for veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau told a judge Wednesday that they were willing to negotiate an agreement regarding access to the material. In order to reach a resolution, they asked Orange Circuit Court Judge Lawrence Kirkwood for an extension in the temporary restraining order he granted last week, which prevents the Orange County Sheriff's Office and Medical Examiner's Office from releasing the images.
