- Alabama will play Notre Dame for the national championship in the game everyone wants to see, but only after playing the game no one wanted to end. File it to your smartphone memory or even carve it in a park bench: Alabama 32, Georgia 28. The attendance was 75,624 and the venue was the Georgia Dome. Crimson Tide fans will tell their grandkids about this game in 25 years while Bulldogs fans stomp their feet and plug their ears. It was tremendous, glorious, stressful and painful - all in the same three Saturday seconds.

Writers from around the Tribune Co. predict which teams will play for the SEC championship and which one will prevail. Feel free to join the discussion with a comment of your own. Chris Dufresne, Los Angeles Times Picking the SEC West is easy. Alabama could lose to Texas A&M again and still win the West on its way to the SEC and national title games. TAMU plays a tougher schedule and will have a tough time getting out of the division with only one loss. That means Alabama needs only to beat LSU at home claim the West.

The University of Kentucky's basketball program, placed on three years' probation by the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. two weeks ago, was dealt another blow when the presidents of the Southeastern Conference stripped the Wildcats of the 1988 SEC championship. The presidents voted, 8-0, to vacate both the 1987-88 regular-season and 1988 SEC tournament titles won by Kentucky because "institutional staff members did or should have known about the ineligibility" of former star Eric Manuel.

Georgia is slotted at No. 5 because that's how many yards the Bulldogs fell short last year of playing (and we presume beating) Notre Dame for the national title. Five…yards. That's less than three fathoms, if you can fathom that. The game-ending call will be second-guessed for years. Georgia, down 32-28, was at Alabama's eight with the clocking clicking inside 15 seconds. With no timeouts left, roughly 99.8% of us sitting at the Georgia Dome that day for the Southeastern Conference championship game expected Georgia to rush to the line and spike the ball.

The Georgia Bulldogs did more than just spoil No. 5 Auburn's title hopes. They finally played like defending Southeastern Conference champions. With Tra Battle returning one of his three first-half interceptions for a touchdown, and freshman quarterback Matthew Stafford's poised passing and running, the Bulldogs salvaged a disappointing season with an emphatic 37-15 victory over the Tigers on Saturday. And those embarrassing losses to Vanderbilt and Kentucky? What losses?

Vanderbilt celebrated wildly, cheered on by sprinkling of gold-and-black-clad fans amid the sea of red. Georgia and its 92,000 backers trudged out of Sanford Stadium in stunned silence. The scoreboard went blank as soon as it was over, a feeble attempt to erase what everyone had just seen. A stunner between the hedges. Bryant Hahnfeldt kicked a 33-yard field goal with two seconds left Saturday to give Vanderbilt a 24-22 upset of No.

Backup quarterback Wayne Johnson got a surprise start Saturday night and led Georgia to a 20-16 upset over No. 8 Auburn. Starting quarterback James Jackson missed the Southeastern Conference game at Auburn, Ala., because of the death of his grandmother, and Johnson, who has played in only three games and thrown only four times, responded with a big-play performance. "I'm very proud of Wayne Johnson, who came in and was unbothered by the situation," Georgia Coach Vince Dooley said.

So you think the Bowl Championship Series standings don't mean much until after the regular season is over? Not if you are in the Southeastern Conference, where this morning coaches, players and fans surely are scouring the conference rule book for the tiebreaker procedures. And what they'll find is that BCS standings at the end of the regular season will be used to break ties in the event that the first six tiebreakers fail to do so.

This weekend's very impatient, 6-year-old kid-like, takeaway question is: Why wait? Can't we just convene a council of BCS bishops and start the four-team playoff now? It would be just like college football to have two spots available this year for four worthy teams and then, in 2014, start a four-team playoff for only two worthy teams. Imagine if this year we get Alabama against Kansas State for the BCS title with 13-0 Oregon and Notre Dame holding the not-so-goody bag. Flash-forward to 2014, as white smoke blows from the chimney of a five-star hotel, where the chairman of a selection committee emerges to announce No. 1 Alabama (13-0)

Georgia's regular season may ultimately begin and end with lopsided defeats in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome, but Bulldogs fans can always cherish the 10 victories in between. What happened to the home-state advantage? Georgia is actually grateful to have earned the chance to lose again in Atlanta after opening the season with a humbling defeat to No. 5 Boise State. Boy, if Georgia thought that 35-21 game at the Georgia Dome was tough…. Months later, Georgia returns with the unenviable task of staring down No.1 Louisiana State in Saturday's Southeastern Conference championship game.

ATLANTA -- Les Miles and Louisiana State can now focus on their future together. After being assured by Miles he would stay as their coach, backup quarterback Ryan Perrilloux and the fifth-ranked Tigers shifted their attention to No. 14 Tennessee. The result was a 21-14 victory Saturday in the Southeastern Conference championship game -- and still a chance to play for the national title.
