Merrill Lynch & Co. will discontinue all business related to racially segregated South Africa, including trading or researching South African securities, the firm said. The move by the country's largest brokerage broadens a policy in place since September, 1987. the firm will no longer engage in any financial or commercial transactions with the South African government, any of its agencies or any corporation or individuals in the country.

Franklin Resources Inc. said it received approval to market unit trust funds in South Africa, the first time Franklin will sell such funds abroad. The move makes the San Mateo-based asset manager the first non-South African company to offer unit trusts in the local market, according to Cerulli Associates Inc., a Boston-based research group. Unit trusts are the equivalent of mutual funds. Boston-based Fidelity Investment Co.
