When two small but respected Orange County brokerages last week announced plans to quit business, they joined the growing list of companies that have fallen victim to a grueling real estate slump. Security Pacific Frost Trinen in Costa Mesa and the brokerage arm of Norris Beggs & Simpson in Irvine both said they will cease operations within the next few months. Last year, Phoenix-based Iliff, Thorn & Co. closed its Orange County office.

The Segerstrom family and International Business Machines Corp. have hired a second brokerage to market their new 21-story office building near Costa Mesa's South Coast Plaza mall. The developer and the computer company retained Coldwell Banker commercial real estate brokerage, the brokerage said recently. Coldwell's brokers will try to sign up tenants for the 458,000-square-foot building, which is scheduled to open in November. Coldwell replaces Security Pacific Frost Trinen Inc.

Security Pacific Corp. said Tuesday that it had bought Frost Trinen Partners, a small commercial real estate brokerage in Costa Mesa. The price was not disclosed. The transaction surprised local brokers. It is unusual--one bank analyst said unique--for a bank to own a brokerage. Richard N. Frost and Robert M. Trinen, founders of the 10-year-old firm, will stay on. That is significant because ordinarily a brokerage's most valuable assets are its brokers and their connections to clients.

He will have global responsibility for sales and marketing activities for the operating company. Kennedy has been with Fluor Daniel for more than 22 years. Fluor Daniel is the principal subsidiary of Fluor Corp. * Richard W. Ormond has joined Procom Technology Inc., an Irvine manufacturer of data storage devices, as vice president of marketing.
