Select Software shares tumbled 33%, or $1.06, to $2.19 after the Irvine company posted a loss for the second quarter and said it will cut costs by about 20% as part of a corporate realignment. As a result of the cuts, the company said it will take a third-quarter charge of $1.45 million. Software also said its president, Ed Holt, has resigned. The company, which provides analysis and design software, said it lost $3.

Select Software Tools PLC, which has dual headquarters in Irvine and England, said Tuesday that its chief executive and chairman of the board has resigned, the second top-level departure at the company in about three months. Company officials declined to comment on Stuart Frost's departure, or whether it was tied to a corporate refocusing that had been announced earlier this year.

Select Software Tools, a Santa Ana-based software company, said it has acquired a software product line from London-based Learmonth and Burchett Management Systems for $2 million. Select officials said the purchase of a product line called Systems Engineer will boost the company's customer base by about 15,000. Both Select and Learmonth and Burchett make so-called software development tools--kits that enable users to build business management software. The acquisition was completed Monday.
