Kylie Minogue has spent much of her time lately in what we might call art-school mode. There was a collaboration with the experimental Icelandic band Múm. There was her appearance in a documentary about Nick Cave. And there was an album of orchestral renditions of her biggest hits. School's out, though, in the Australian pop diva's new single, "Into the Blue," which layers words about running free and leaving it all behind over a thumping disco groove with only one thing on its mind.

In 2011, on his holiday album "Under the Mistletoe," Justin Bieber came on like Mariah Carey's kid nephew - a sort of pint-sized vocal prodigy - in a squeaky-clean duet with the singer on her "All I Want for Christmas Is You. " Not anymore. Two Christmases later, Bieber is nearing the end of a year in which he's done about as much as possible to shake off the childlike innocence that helped establish him as one of pop music's biggest (and most polarizing) acts. The incidents will be familiar even to casual followers of celebrity gossip: the heated run-in with a photographer in London, the unauthorized spray-painting of walls in South America and Australia, the urination into a mop bucket in a New York restaurant.

Selena Gomez is taking a bit of a hiatus from music. For real. The "Stars Dance" singer has canceled her upcoming tour dates in Australia, her rep told The Times. The dates would have begun in February and included five stops Down Under. "My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them," the 21-year-old said in a statement. "But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be. " PHOTOS: Selena Gomez's career highlights It's unclear how long the singer will be on hiatus, but Gomez is scheduled to perform in Japan, China, Malaysia and the Philippines through January 2014. After that, her last scheduled performance was set for Hidalgo, Texas, on March 8, 2014.

Selena Gomez slipped an F-bomb into her set during KIIS-FM's annual Jingle Ball concert in Los Angeles due to some frustration over sound problems. Audio and microphone malfunctions rattled the former Disney star and eventually led to her walking off stage Friday night at Staples Center. "Sorry, the sound isn't working!" Gomez told the crowd, according to Us Weekly and an amateur video shot at the concert. "Are you guys having a good night? I promise, a lot cooler people are gonna come out tonight.

The line between respectable pop music and its gauche, teenage-courting offspring had a physical address on Friday night: Chick Hearn Court in downtown L.A. That's the street that divides Staples Center and the L.A. Live complex, where the KIIS-FM Jingle Ball and the Grammy nominations concert offered two very different, but occasionally overlapping, schools of Top-40 success. At Nokia Theatre, the Grammys lent their imprimatur to rising stars offering messages of austerity. The teenage New Zealand electro-pop singer Lorde had a smash with the bling-mocking “Royals,” and hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis offered a jollier riff on a similar theme with “Thrift Shop.” But at Staples Center, Jingle Ball celebrated the tarter, girlier yet often still great stuff that the Grammys rarely acknowledge -- the '90s-frizzy dance pop of Fifth Harmony, Ariana Grande's featherweight R&B, and yes, Miley Cyrus licking a Christmas tree.
