Judging by the media's coverage of Nelson Mandela's memorial this week, the gathering in South Africa consisted primarily of President Obama appeasing enemies of the United State and snapping juvenile "selfies" with his fellow national leaders. Those stirring eulogies of the late revolutionary who guided his country out of apartheid in the early 1990s were really just a sideshow. Our readers weren't having it. Almost all of the letters we received about the memorial dismissed the criticism of Obama's handshake with Cuban leader Raul Castro as petty politics; in fact, several praised Obama for his gesture.

Lana Del Rey was in no way afraid of the selfie. At three different points in the alt-torch singer's 45-minute Outdoor Stage set Sunday night, Del Rey descended into the audience to vamp and pose with fans, allowing - encouraging, even - the rampant repurposing of her image across social media. She even prolongued one cinematically sexy smooch with a male fan who couldn't seem to get his phone-camera game together quickly enough to simply point and shoot.   Given Del Rey's nostalgia-tinged sex appeal, who could have blamed him?

LONDON -- In what was described as an unusually unanimous decision, “selfie” has been chosen as word of the year by the publishers of the Oxford English Dictionary, beating out “twerk” and a host of other Internet and social-media-related terms, such as “bitcoin,” that have exploded onto the verbal scene in recent years. “It seems like everyone who is anyone has posted a selfie somewhere on the Internet,” Oxford Dictionaries said on its blog , without offering an accompanying selfie of the writer.

Selfies are great, particularly yours. But wouldn't they be better if they could be used as your and your loved ones' Gmail inbox background pictures? That's what Google thinks. To lead into one of its jokes for April Fools' Day 2014, Google is jumping on the selfie bandwagon by letting users upload their self-portraits to use as Gmail inbox themes. The company is also letting users share these themes with one another. They're shareable selfies, or as Google likes to call them, "Shelfies.

The latest sign that the apocalypse is nigh arrived Wednesday when the eggheads behind Britain's Oxford Dictionaries announced plans to add four words that are hard to say without gagging a little.  But, for the sake of illuminating our readers, we shall do our best to share them here. For, lo, their ascension into the mainstream reveals so much about the decline and fall of pop culture. Brace yourself.  PHOTOS: Biggest tech flops of 2013 -- so far Selfie : This refers to the smartphone self-portraits that people take.

It's nearly 2014 and here's where we are in the gender wars: A female prime minister talking to a male president is presumed to be flirting, and he is presumed to be flirting back. His Ivy-League-educated wife, sitting with them, is presumed to be preparing to claw both their eyes out. Or so the Internet buzzed Tuesday when it took off after President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Denmark's Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt. The setting was the memorial service in Soweto's soccer stadium for Nelson Mandela; the prime minister and the Obamas were seated in the VIP section during the lengthy, dance-filled, upbeat celebration of Mandela's 95 years.

Taking photos of ourselves is the signature act of our times. We know this not because the president snapped one with world leaders at Nelson Mandela's memorial service Tuesday, but because "selfie" is the Oxford English Dictionary's Word of the Year. And as you may read more than once in the weeks since the Nov. 19 announcement, this is a sign of the apocalypse. Just about every blogger, columnist and style reporter has deemed selfie-mania a pernicious outgrowth of the era's unparalleled narcissism.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell got in the Throwback Thursday fun on Facebook with a vintage selfie -- one that was taken long before selfies became a thing. He posted a black and white photo of himself on his Facebook page with the caption: "Throwback Thursday -- I was doing selfies 60 years before you Facebook folks. Eat your heart out Ellen!" The Ellen reference is, of course, to Ellen DeGeneres, who took a selfie with movie stars at the Oscars that went viral and holds the record for most retweets . He tagged the page for "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in his update.

A "selfie" found in a cell phone dropped during the ransack burglary of a Chula Vista church has led to the arrest of the man in the picture and two other suspects, police said. The phone was found at the scene of the break-in at Hilltop Tabernacle Church in which cash, a laptop computer and other items were taken, Chula Vista police said. Police recognized the area shown in the picture as Harborside Park. People at the park recognized the man in the picture. Police then contacted the man -- Adam Howe, 26 -- who admitted to burglarizing the church and a nearby recreational vehicle, officials said.

As Flatbush Zombies turned the energy up high early on Day One of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the general admission lines were deeply snarled as security staffers struggled to check in  hundreds of attendees. Despite the heat (temps were already in the high 90s), event staffers on the Empire Polo Grounds kept things light by greeting guests with cheers and high-fiving them as if they had just reached the end of a marathon. The "finish line" was the electronic stations on which guests tap with their wristbands to get beeped into the festival grounds.

If you happen to bump into President Obama at the White House and aren't allowed to take a selfie to record the occasion, you can thank David Ortiz. It started with a seemingly spontaneous moment during the Boston Red Sox's visit to the White House last week, when Ortiz snapped a photo of himself and the president with his Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The reigning World Series MVP posted the photo on Twitter and it has been retweeted more than 42,500 times. One of those retweets came from Samsung, which has more than 5.2 followers and also just happens to have an endorsement deal with Ortiz.

Suddenly, the selfie is everywhere. It's been around since forever, but Ellen DeGeneres' Oscar-night selfie has suddenly made it a pop culture "thing" for celebrities to do. Latest evidence: Bill Murray, Lady Gaga and David Letterman on Wednesday night's "Late Show. " Murray popped up continually on Letterman's show Wednesday night as he checked items off his personal bucket list. He asked, and was allowed, to deliver a joke during Letterman's monologue. And he got Letterman to air a clip from his movie, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and read nice things off a piece of paper.

So what's going on with Jennette McCurdy? The costar of "Sam & Cat," a show spun off from Nickelodeon's "iCarly," was absent over the weekend from the Kids' Choice Awards - and now her live-action comedy has apparently gone on hiatus unexpectedly. Skipping the fan-voted KCAs is no biggie, right? Unless you're scheduled to be there, and your show is so hot it wins top TV comedy, which the popular "Sam & Cat" did, and your costar is so hot she wins top TV actress, which Ariana Grande did.  Initial speculation was that the 21-year-old McCurdy had stayed off the red carpet because of sexy lingerie selfies that were leaked online at the beginning of March (more on that later)
