Huell Howser's desert retreat in Twentynine Palms has sold, along with an adjacent 71-acre parcel, for $650,000 in an all-cash deal. The proceeds from the sale of the late travelogue host's house benefit an endowed scholarship and Howser archives as Chapman University in Orange. There were multiple offers on the Midcentury Modern home, which has 2,221 square feet of living space and sits on 12 acres. Howser renovated the house after he bought the property more than 15 years ago for $160,000.

Barry Bonds, the former All-Star outfielder, has sold his Italian-inspired estate in gated Beverly Park for $22 million. Designed as a family home capable of hosting large-scale events, the 17,100-square-foot villa sits off a circular motor court with a fountain. The 1.85 acres of grounds include a swimming pool, a 2,100-square-foot sports court and an olive grove. Ceiling heights up to 30 feet, hand-painted murals, limestone columns and Venetian plaster walls are among interior details.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Tuesday he was bent on writing "a new chapter" for the Department of Water and Power with the help of its new leader Marcie Edwards - a task that goes beyond cleaning up its woebegone billing system, he said. In electing him mayor, "Los Angeles voters really gave me a mandate to reform the DWP," Garcetti told a roomful of business leaders and reporters Tuesday. Even his own father - onetime Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti - had complained to him about being on hold with the agency for more than 40 minutes, the mayor said.

Venus Williams has sold a home in Hollywood Hills West for $1.7 million. The midcentury post-and-beam house, built in 1955, features a foyer, a den, an updated kitchen, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Tax records show the house has 1,528 square feet of living space. The swimming pool, lawn and deck have canyon views. There are also mountain views from the nearly half-acre site, which is set off a gated driveway. Williams, 33, is a former Women's Tennis Assn. No. 1-ranked singles player.

Jared Padalecki, who stars on the long-running CW series "Supernatural," has recorded a very down-to-earth house sale in the San Fernando Valley for $2.4 million. The 1924 Spanish-style home, featuring vaulted beam ceilings and stained glass, has been fully renovated. A rough-hewn wooden door serves as the house's portal, so to speak. The 3,818 square feet of space inside includes a massive arch-topped window, a glass-enclosed library/office, a family/game room, four bedrooms and five bathrooms.

A Costa Mesa man pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that he sold pot brownies to Newport Harbor High School students, sickening them. Isaac Adam Greer, 33, a self-described gang member, appeared in Orange County Superior Court on two felony counts of selling marijuana to a minor and a third felony count of possessing marijuana for sale, the Daily Pilot reported . As more of our children's education moves online, there are increased opportunities for abusing the collection of their personal data. Last month, state Senate leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) introduced a bill that would help close a loophole in federal regulations - at least in California - in an effort to safeguard personal information of public school students. The potential privacy violations could be significant, and it makes sense for the Legislature to act now. Under the federal Family and Educational Rights Protection Act, schools that receive federal funding are rightly barred from making disclosures about students' education records without permission.

Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting and her husband, Ryan Sweeting, have bought the Tarzana home of former Laker Lamar Odom and television personality Khloe Kardashian, The Times has confirmed. The home received multiple offers, went into escrow within 10 days of coming on the market, and sold for its asking price of $5.499 million. The Mediterranean-style villa sits on three-quarters of an acre in gated Mulholland Park. Entered through a two-story foyer with a sweeping staircase, the 8,000-square-foot home features custom closets, mosaic tile details, a den, a home theater, seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms.
