Biopsy device maker SenoRx Inc. in Aliso Viejo said Monday that it raised $19 million by selling an undisclosed stake in the company to a financing firm and current investors. Privately held SenoRx said in a news release that the equity financing came from a group led by MPM Capital LP and included existing investors like CIT Ventures. Proceeds will be used to bring products to market.

Orange County's fledgling businesses garnered a record amount of venture capital funds last year, and the money should continue to flow in. Investors poured $538 million into 72 county start-ups in 1999, nearly double the 1998 total, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. Data firm Venture Economics, using a different method for calculating this funding, put the figure at more than $1 billion.

Robert Kreps has been named senior director, national sales, for Toshiba America Medical Systems in Tustin. Kreps, who joined Toshiba in 1997, had been senior director of the Healthcare Business Development group. Steve Sickels has been named senior director of the ultrasound business unit. Sickels was previously director of the MRI business unit and director, manager and product manager of nuclear medicine for the company. * Rex K.
