Ilana Raskin, a belly dancer from Philadelphia, had carved out a place for herself on the Israeli bar mitzvah and wedding circuit. Her act was a favorite among Israelis from North Africa and the Near East, where festive occasions are not complete without Oriental dance. But then Raskin began to notice that job opportunities were drying up. Other belly dancers also complained of hard times.
