Sequoia Supply, one of the nation's major wholesalers of wood siding and related products, and New York-based Grip-Rite Group merged Tuesday in a $125-million deal that creates the largest independent building products distributor in the country. The combined, privately held firm, to be called PrimeSource Inc., will be headquartered in Irvine. It will have 1,000 employees, 46 distribution centers and sales of about $450 million this year, said Richard D.

Orange County is home to 10 of the 100 largest privately held companies in California, and four local firms are in the top 20, according to an annual survey released this week by California Business magazine, Pacific Financial Co., a Newport Beach insurance and pension company with annual revenues of $2.09 billion, again heads the list of the county's largest private firms.

Private companies can be hard to figure financially, but there's no doubt that some are major players in the county's business landscape. Ten of the 100 largest private companies in California are based in Orange County, according to California Business magazine, citing a survey by Dun & Bradstreet Corp. The companies are ranked by sales in the 1987 fiscal year. You would expect the real estate industry to be well represented in the list, and it is, with developers William Lyon Co.
