Sheriff's detectives are asking for help in finding the person who since May has broken into a dozen homes and raped or tried to rape two women in the Hacienda Heights area. The crimes, often committed between 5 and 7:30 a.m., have been carried out under similar circumstances. But detectives are not sure whether the same person committed them, said sheriff's spokeswoman Benita Hinojos.

The signs of the first day of school were everywhere. Crisp new uniforms, shiny clean backpacks, freshly sharpened pencils and assemblies on how to avoid being kidnapped by a stranger. As students worried about meeting their new teachers, parents and principals worried about the man who attacked six children in the South Bay during the first half of the year and seemingly disappeared once summer vacation began.

There are now 150 detectives on the case of the South Bay child molester, the man in the gray van who is wanted in a string of molestations and attempted abductions in the last six months. That is more investigators than the FBI had working the Unabomber case. It is also testament to what happens when television news, children, sexual violence and parental fears coalesce.

A serial rapist is being sought in attacks on seven women living in and near the affluent Belmont Heights neighborhood of Long Beach, where a series of sexual assaults occurred earlier this year. The most recent rape was reported Monday, but some of the attacks date back a year, Long Beach police said Wednesday. "This guy was hitting so sporadically that nobody made a link until recently," said Detective Craig Newland of the department's sex crime detail.

The prospect of defeat dogs the men and women who have gathered every day at the Los Angeles County sheriff's station in Lennox to sift through hundreds of leads about a man with a goatee driving a gray van, a man who molests little girls on their way to school. The tips, totaling 1,850, have dwindled to a dribble, and none of them led anywhere promising, Sheriff's Department representatives say. And now the task force's numbers are dwindling, too. Last week, sheriff's Sgt.

San Gabriel Valley police reported Saturday that a lone male appears to be responsible for two recent abductions and sexual assaults of teen-age girls in Azusa and West Covina. West Covina Police Lt. Jim Dillon said Saturday that a man driving a mini-pickup truck who kidnaped and assaulted a 13-year-old girl Tuesday may be the same man who committed a similar crime against a 13-year-old West Covina girl May 13.
