"In our American society, if you're not doing something, there is something wrong with you," said Father Warren J. Rouse, OFM, director of the Serra Retreat in Malibu. At no time is this more evident than in the waning days of the holiday season. What better time to question the necessity --or sanity--of perpetual motion than at the dawn of a new year. There is no better place to ponder this question than Serra Retreat, a Franciscan monastery deep in a wooded canyon near Malibu.

My weekend of quiet and reflection and meditative peace began in a thrumming snarl of rush-hour traffic and blue exhaust haze on, first, the San Diego Freeway, then Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. I hardly ever got out of first gear, and by the time I left that grim mob and turned right onto Serra Road, I was beginning to think that what I needed was a permanent gig with the Trappists and not just a couple of placid days on a retreat with the Franciscans.

Some 6,500 square feet of living space include an office, theater, gym, six bedrooms and six bathrooms. Outdoors is a swimming pool with cabana, a kitchen with a pizza oven and a fire pit. The former Creative Artists Agency agent represented such stars as Heath Ledger, Jeff Bridges and Natalie Portman before joining the Mosaic Media Group several years ago and returning to his origins as a producer.

Residents of the Serra Retreat area in Malibu like the seclusion of their lush canyon, but the privacy comes with a price. A motorist who crashed into a tree on Serra Road in 1981 sued each of about 100 homeowners for $10 million. The motorist, who was severely injured in the accident, settled out of court five years later for a total of about $1 million. In the aftermath of the settlement, Serra Retreat residents paid to install a gatehouse on Serra Road just north of Pacific Coast Highway.

Re "High-Tech Team Seeks to Clean Up Creek," Aug. 16. As a young girl back in the 1930s, I often played and, yes, canoed in the Malibu Lagoon and its creek with my friend and neighbor Sylvia Adamson, whose parents, the Merritt Adamsons, owned the property and its adjacent Mediterranean estate--now a state-run tourist attraction. Alongside the creek, on the other side of the bridge, Sylvia's mother raised sheep as a hobby and her grandmother, May Knight Rindge, Malibu's largest landholder, was building an enormous family compound on the site of the present Serra Retreat.

A Malibu neighborhood that has been used as a dump site for construction materials and garbage wants to become a gated community. "If we have a gate, we can keep out people who don't belong," said Neil Bullock, president of the La Chusa Highlands Improvement Assn., a group seeking to gate three privately owned streets in West Malibu. The residents also fear being sued by motorists who are injured in accidents on their streets.

Blaming small-scale septic systems for causing much of the pollution in Malibu's watershed, the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board will vote Thursday whether to ban the systems in a large portion of central and eastern Malibu. Under the proposed moratorium, no new septic systems would be permitted, and owners of existing systems would have to halt wastewater discharges within five years. Far from a mundane issue, the staff-recommended proposal has prompted heated debate and threats of legal action in Malibu, where almost all homes and businesses rely on septic systems.

There was a time when a couple of days away at a good hotel or spa made all the difference. Today, many people want--and need--more. Melba Levick and Stanley Young understand this. So they set out to create a practical guide to the many retreat centers available to the public, from Big Sur's New Camaldoli hermitage to Colorado's Benet Pines Retreat to the Serra Retreat in Malibu.
