Just a block away from a sheriff's station and Lakewood City Hall, gunfire erupted in a crowded multiplex theater late Wednesday night, setting off pandemonium that resulted in three injuries and hundreds of screaming patrons ducking or running for cover. About 600 people were inside the Pacific Lakewood Theater for the opening night showing of "Set It Off," a movie about a crime spree starring rap artist Queen Latifah, when the gunfire broke out. No arrests were made.

Security is being beefed up outside some theaters showing the crime movie "Set It Off" after Saturday's fatal shooting outside a crowded Torrance theater. United Artists Theaters, which owns the Torrance movie house where a man was killed and two teenagers were wounded, said Monday that it plans to increase security at many of its 415 theaters showing the film across the nation. Other theater operators and malls said they have similar plans. The shooting occurred about 11 p.m.

In the second shooting of its kind in less than a week, one man was killed and two others were wounded when gunfire erupted outside a crowded Torrance theater showing the crime movie "Set It Off," police said Sunday. The shooting occurred about 11 p.m. Saturday after members of two rival gangs got into a fight outside the United Artists theater at the Del Amo Fashion Center, Sgt. E.C. LaLonde said. "At least one punch was thrown before a handgun was brought out," he said.
