Jim Henson's Muppets and Dr. Seuss' wackiness would seem a perfect match, and indeed, "The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss," Jim Henson Productions' new series for Nickelodeon, is a visual treat. The target audience seems to be the very young, however, a surprisingly narrow focus for a prime-time family show. "The Muppet Show," this isn't. Hosted by the Cat in the Hat, the gentle series features musical Muppet tales based on Dr.

Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat Mike Myers, Alec Baldwin Universal, $27 This big-budget version of the beloved Dr. Seuss book is far from the cat's meow. Though the production design, costumes and the animated title sequence beautifully capture the mood and style of the book, the script is a crude mess unfit for kiddie consumption. And Myers comes across as a feline version of the "Coffee Talk" character he created for "Saturday Night Live," and his cat quickly wears out all of his nine lives.

Dunlap set out Tuesday to show her students at Saticoy Elementary School in east Ventura that reading can be both fun and fundamental.

There's a little tale about trees that's quickly become required reading all across timber-laden Mendocino County--not just in the classroom, but in the coffee shops and service station waiting rooms as well. It's not about the stately redwood, the towering symbol of a once-thriving economy in this depressed lumber town of about 900 residents--a place without even one traffic light, a mere eyeblink along U.S. 101, about 150 miles north of San Francisco.

KCET-TV has already made clear that it will no longer be telling children how to get to "Sesame Street. " But that's not the only kiddie fare that the public- television station is relinquishing once it assumes its new guise as an independent channel on Saturday. Gone will be the furry friends of "Curious George," the scientific principles of "Sid the Science Kid" and the wacky adventures of "Clifford the Big Red Dog. " Ditto "Dinosaur Train," "Martha Speaks," "Super Why!" and "The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!"
