In a case that promises to generate lurid tales of sex, drugs and rock n' roll, jury selection is scheduled to begin this week in San Fernando Superior Court for the sexual assault and torture trial of singer Rick James and his girlfriend, Tanya Anne Hijazi. James, 45, and Hijazi, 23, also are facing charges stemming from a separate incident in which they allegedly beat up another woman and held her prisoner in the tony St. James's Club Hotel in West Hollywood.

Police are searching for a man who abducted and sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl who was riding a bicycle through her neighborhood Monday. The man forced the girl into his pickup truck near Criswell Street and Kentland Avenue, said Sgt. David Medof of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Division. After assaulting the girl at a home, he drove her to a residential area and released her, Medof said. The girl knocked on a door and asked for help.

A gardener pleaded no contest in Van Nuys Municipal Court on Friday to a single count of sexually abusing a customer's pet--a 100-pound male German shepherd named Bubu. Commissioner Mitch Block placed the gardener, Arturo Mathias, 47, of Northridge, on three years' probation and ordered him to undergo psychiatric counseling for two years. Mathias also received a six-month suspended sentence. "The saga of Bubu has ended," declared Deputy City Atty.

Russell Otis, the highly successful boys' basketball coach at Compton Dominguez High, was arrested Thursday and booked on suspicion of sexual battery, and sodomy with a person under age 18, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. Deputy Bruce Thomas said Otis, 38, was arrested by detectives with the Family Crime Bureau around 11 a.m. and was booked and being held at the Carson sub-station.

A 34-year-old West Hollywood woman has filed suit against singer Rick James, alleging that he and his girlfriend held her captive and assaulted her in a tony West Hollywood hotel. Mary Sauger filed suit Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking unspecified damages from James, his girlfriend, Tanya Anne Hijazi, and the St. James's Club Hotel on allegations of assault, battery, false imprisonment and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

A sheriff's deputy who worked as a bailiff in Van Nuys Superior Court was ordered to stand trial Friday for having sex with female jail inmates. After rejecting a defense contention that a law barring inmate sex does not apply to deputies, Los Angeles Municipal Judge Elva R. Soper ordered the trial. Larry Fraize was videotaped performing a sex act with a jail inmate during a sting operation on May 4, authorities have alleged.

The trial of a Reseda dentist charged with sexually assaulting two women in his office opened Thursday with defense attorneys attacking the credibility of the doctor's accusers. James E. Blatt, an attorney representing Dr. Kamal Matian, called one of the alleged victims "a perjurer and a liar" as well as a convicted felon.

Jealousy motivated Stuart Milburn to use a chokehold to strangle and kill a rival martial arts instructor and dump her body along a Santa Clarita road, a prosecutor said Tuesday. A sex scandal did not end this week when a prominent developer and his father were convicted of pandering and other charges relating to paying teen-age girls for sex, authorities confirmed Friday. Burbank police said they are now investigating allegations by at least one girl that Michael A. Mersola and his 82-year-old father not only paid teen-agers for sex, but that he also set up meetings between the girls and other men.

A high school coach accused of committing lewd acts with three students was ordered Thursday by a court commissioner to stand trial on six felony counts. Abel Ramirez, 35, is charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, committing a lewd act with a child and three counts of sexual battery by force. One count of attempted forcible sodomy was dismissed at Thursday's preliminary hearing in San Fernando Municipal Court. Ramirez is set to be arraigned July 15 in San Fernando Superior Court.

A Panorama City service station worker was found guilty Monday of sexually attacking a woman in December as she worked in the stockroom, authorities said. Magdi Helmy, 37, was convicted of sexual battery and battery by a Van Nuys Municipal Court jury after a five-day trial. Helmy, who is free on his own recognizance, was ordered to return to court May 20 for sentencing. He faces up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Detectives are searching for a man they believe molested at least eight women in Northridge over the last few months. The series of sexual batteries began at the end of last year and the most recent occurred in late March, said Los Angeles Police Det. Michael Lewin. The molester targets Latinas, he said. "He engages them in conversation and distracts them," Lewin said. "In a number of cases . . . he tells them they have something on their clothing. They are caught off guard and he assaults them."

A man who allegedly sexually assaulted a teenage boy and tried to abduct another youth near the Nickerson Gardens housing project in Watts remains at large, police said Thursday. The first incident occurred Feb. 25 near Central Avenue and Imperial Highway, police said. The suspect, who was riding a bicycle, abducted a 13-year-old male, investigators said. He was taken to an abandoned residence, sexually assaulted and then released, police said.

With some members alluding to the recent kidnap-slaying of a 10-year-old Beaumont boy, the City Council approved a $25,000 reward Wednesday for information leading to the arrest of a man believed to have sexually assaulted a 7-year-old boy at a North Hills fast-food restaurant. "It's an appropriate time to be mindful that there are those in society who don't care about young children," said Councilman Richard Alarcon, whose district lies just east of the crime scene.

A 37-year-old U.S. Secret Service agent was being held on $500,000 bail Friday after being charged with committing various sex acts with a 16-year-old girl and giving her drugs. Timothy John O'Brien, a six-year agent, was charged with one felony count each of unlawful sex with a minor, oral copulation with a minor, sodomy with a minor, unlawful penetration of a minor and furnishing methamphetamines to a minor. O'Brien pleaded innocent Friday afternoon to the charges in Municipal Court.

Police are investigating whether a man suspected of indecent exposure in several Los Angeles-area communities is the person who flashed several shoppers earlier this week in a supermarket parking lot, authorities said Tuesday. About 12:30 p.m. Sunday, several shoppers told police that a man flashed them in the Max Foods parking lot in the 15300 block of Golden West Street. The next day, a man with a similar description led Long Beach police on a high-speed chase before being arrested.
