Just last week, the front-page story in the local paper--right up there in the top right corner--was headlined, "Hemet Kiwanis quits barbecue; Valley Kiwanis likely new host." And then the local football coach and his wife were arrested for allegedly providing sex to players. If a town can be turned on its head, this place is testimony: Probably nothing else could so rattle a community and attract out-of-town reporters like moths swarming to a spotlight. "It's like, Hemet is open to sex.

Benny Gene Powell, whose 17 years of wrongful imprisonment won him $3.5 million last year, was convicted this week of sexually assaulting a UCLA student and faces returning to prison for up to 52 years. Powell, 47, was convicted by a Riverside County Superior Court jury in connection with the May, 1993, assault of a 35-year-old German student in a motel room in Beaumont, near Palm Springs.

In a case that elevated tensions in U.S.-Mexico relations, a Mexican judge has sentenced a former California ranch hand to a 31-year prison term after finding him guilty of abducting and sexually assaulting a Riverside County girl, Mexican authorities said Thursday.

Two guards at the California State Prison at Folsom were wounded Friday by prison-made spears thrown through cell bars by two inmates, a prison spokesman said. Lt. T. J. Smith said the spears were made from tightly rolled newspapers with plastic points. Both attacks occurred while the officers were giving breakfast to inmates in lockup units where "management problem" prisoners are kept.
