At one time it was adultery. Then it was drinking, followed by drug addiction or domestic violence. Now, over the past half-dozen years, child sexual abuse allegations have come to be seen as the most powerful "J'accuse" in divorce battles. The accusations have become so fraught with overtones of sinister gamesmanship that Woody Allen, in fighting recent allegations that he molested his 7-year-old adopted daughter, turned around and charged his accuser, Mia Farrow, with having played "the child abuse card."

Congratulations to Barry Siegel for tackling a controversial issue ("Idaho Gothic," May 17). Unfortunately, he appears to have fallen for the same shtick that has kept authorities off the trail of Satan worshipers. Tragically, sexual molestation and torture of children are part and parcel of satanic ritual. The eyewitness testimony from survivors is consistent around the world and, in recent years, has become overwhelming. The most painful cut of all was when little Timothy's testimony was disregarded.

The Navy's inspector general issued a scathing report Thursday that described in graphic detail the sexual molestation of 26 women at a 1991 convention of naval aviators, and he charged that top Navy admirals had "tacitly approved" of such activity for years. The Naval Investigative Service said its seven-month investigation showed the women, more than half of them officers, suffered "varying degrees of sexual assaults."

A woman testified at a hearing here Wednesday that her 4-year-old daughter told her that two women who operate a day-care home in Cypress had "played doctor" with her and sexually molested her. A psychologist who examined the child this week also testified that the girl told him that the owner of the day-care home, Terri Borzoni, had "put pencils in my bottom." But attorneys for Borzoni, 36, countered that the child's stories are inconsistent and unbelievable.

The young woman was first startled, then alarmed by the sexual advances of the man for whom she had been baby-sitting. He had offered to walk her home, complimented her beauty and, when she said she was cold and wanted to go inside her house, he suggestively offered to make her chill go away. How did she feel? Incomoda . Uncomfortable, answered students in a Lennox Middle School class, watching a role play about sexual abuse conducted last week in Spanish.
