May I suggest USC's Calvin Banks get in touch with Shane Foley to learn how to be a really valuable team member. Foley's attitude toward being sidelined shows he is ably equipped to contribute to life after football, where it is really going to count. ROSEMARY BRYANS Huntington Beach

Shane Foley, a former Orange County career passing leader who saw limited action at USC, was selected by the London Monarchs in the 15th round of the World League of American Football draft Wednesday. "I'm really excited about getting another chance to play," said Foley, who passed for 5,361 yards while at Newport Harbor in 1984 and 1985, a mark later surpassed by Todd Marinovich. "I've never been to Europe. I'm really pumped up about going over there and playing football again.

Top 10 reasons why I wish Todd Marinovich would leave USC: 10. After seeing a more talented quarterback (Shane Foley) wasted for two years by Larry Smith, I'd hate to see the same happen to Reggie Perry. 9. His psychological problems are a major detriment to a program that, without him, has got to be the odds-on favorite to be national champion in two years. 8. He has no class (he should have learned from Foley). 7. I'm sick and tired of hearing about his completion percentage.

Newport Harbor High School quarterback Shane Foley, who surpassed Capistrano Valley's Burt Call as Orange County's career passing leader last fall, has made an oral commitment to attend USC on a football scholarship. Foley, a 6-foot-2, 195-pounder, said he will sign a national letter of intent on Feb. 12. In two seasons, Foley passed for 5,264 yards. Call had set the record by passing for 4,956 yards in three seasons (1981-83).

The winner and still starter? Would you go for 50-50? Shane Foley was the victorious quarterback when USC beat Arizona State Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium, but there was no certainty about his future. It seems he suddenly has one after residing in the shadows of Todd Marinovich the first two months of the season. All Foley earned Saturday was incumbency. Coach Larry Smith was quick to point out after the Trojans' 13-6 victory that Foley is No.

Notre Dame's Raghib (Rocket) Ismail is "very, very doubtful" for Saturday night's game against USC at the Coliseum, Irish Coach Lou Holtz said Tuesday. A deep thigh bruise kept Ismail out of the second half of Notre Dame's 24-21 loss to Penn State last Saturday at South Bend, Ind. Ismail injured his right thigh two months ago against Michigan State, aggravated the injury a week later against Purdue and didn't play the next week in a 36-31 loss to Stanford at Notre Dame.

Approaching a flank of minicams and reporters Tuesday night after practice, Shane Foley wasn't quite sure what to do. "Where do I stand?" asked USC's new starting quarterback, fidgeting as he spoke. A seldom-used backup since the day he arrived on campus from Newport Harbor High in Newport Beach four years ago, Foley is unaccustomed to the spotlight. He found it this week, however, when Todd Marinovich was suspended by Coach Larry Smith for academic reasons.

Shane Foley, USC's backup quarterback, was arrested early Monday on a charge of public intoxication after he allegedly kicked a window on a taxi cab without provocation, Newport Beach police said Thursday. Foley, 22, allegedly came out of a restaurant and bar on Marine Avenue on Balboa Island with Jeff Fryer, a former Loyola Marymount basketball player, and kicked the window repeatedly, police spokesman Tim Newman said. Foley was arrested at 2:30 a.m.

Todd Marinovich and Shane Foley will compete for the starting quarterback job this week as USC prepares to play UCLA Saturday in the Rose Bowl. But Coach Larry Smith seemed to indicate Tuesday that his preference would be to go with Marinovich, who was lifted in the second quarter of Saturday's game against Oregon State and didn't return. "Between the two of them, I don't think there's any question that Marinovich is best suited for our offense because we want balance," Smith said.

After watching them compete in practice all week, Coach Larry Smith announced Friday that USC's starting quarterback in today's game against California would be . . . Todd Marinovich. Or Shane Foley. Calling the competition too close to call--"Both Todd and Shane had great practices this week," he said--Smith promised at least to choose before the Trojans take the field at the Coliseum.

Quarterback Todd Marinovich was reinstated by USC football Coach Larry Smith on Monday, six days after Marinovich was suspended for cutting classes. Is he a starter? Not at present. He is listed second on the depth chart behind Shane Foley, a fifth-year senior who filled in for Marinovich Saturday against Arizona State and, in his first start for the Trojans, passed for 125 yards and ran for 60 in a 13-6 victory at Tempe, Ariz.
