Was that really Steve Spurrier coaching the Washington Redskins? With an attack bearing little resemblance to Spurrier's Fun 'n' Gun, the Redskins dominated the Indianapolis Colts with a patient offense that moved the yardsticks and controlled the clock in a 26-21 victory Sunday night. Shane Matthews, unhappy that he was benched three weeks ago, justified his gripe by returning to lead a methodical, nearly error-free attack. The Redskins (3-4) ended a two-game losing streak.

With Jim Miller's hip still giving him trouble, Chicago Bear Coach Dick Jauron picked Shane Matthews to start at quarterback for his team's game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Miller, who took half the snaps in Friday's practice, will be available as the primary backup, Jauron said. He was limited to light workouts Wednesday and Thursday after being sidelined because of a hip pointer in the first half of last week's game against San Francisco.

The worst possible thing is happening to Bear quarterback Shane Matthews--he's going to be playing football. Matthews has hung around for five seasons, essentially because he has not played. The undrafted free-agent quarterback from Florida has two quarters of NFL experience, having done well enough in a 1996 cameo performance in Tampa to start this season with the league's highest quarterback rating, 124.1.

Shane Matthews completed 20 of 37 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns in leading No. 6 Florida to a 47-15 victory over Kentucky Saturday at Lexington, Ky. Florida, 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the Southeastern Conference, is on probation and ineligible for the title, but the Gators have clinched at least a tie for the best record in the SEC. Also, the Gators, who play Florida State Dec. 1, won nine of their first 10 games for the first time in the school's 84-year football history.

"He will follow the plan of the doctors as far as his rehab work," Coach Dave Wannstedt said. "Surgery is not in the plans at this point. He's just going to get healthy and see."
