Victor Keung Wong, whose gentle demeanor and wispy white beard and mustache made him a popular character actor who was frequently cast as a grandfather or wise man in films such as "The Joy Luck Club," "The Last Emperor" and "The Golden Child," has died. He was 74. Wong, who was born in San Francisco's Chinatown, died in his sleep Sept. 12 at his farmhouse near Locke, Calif., where his father ran a school for Chinese children in the 1930s.

To promote their new film, "Swept Away," which Screen Gems opens Friday in limited release, Madonna and her husband, the British director Guy Ritchie, made a playful 30-minute special that recently aired on MTV. "Why did you hire me to star in your film and not Julia Roberts?" the pop star asks Ritchie, to which the filmmaker replies, "Actually, I did ask her and she said no."

"A lot of people feel intimidated by cooking Asian food," says Sylvia Lim. "They think it's too elaborate and too difficult." Lim, a Singaporean, hopes that the cookbook on which she is working will change this attitude. She is a newspaper editor with the Straits Times Group and has been in Los Angeles for the past several months. This has given her the opportunity to test her recipes with products available in American markets.

Dick Wolfe has this fantasy. It involves his Cal State Fullerton men's gymnastics team and its meet against UCLA on Jan. 30. And, get this. It involves a capacity crowd in Titan Gym to watch. "That's my goal," Wolfe was saying just the other day. "We're going to have 4,000 people in there. We're going fill that sucker." They would be there, so this fantasy goes, to see Fullerton meet an NCAA power and to see the Titans' newest drawing card.

He's played with all three surviving Beatles, but in recent years, guitarist Laurence Juber has found his favorite musical partner--himself. Juber, 40, of Studio City, has just released his second solo album, "Naked Guitar," on Beachwood Recordings, which features acoustical recordings he has composed over the last decade. "I like the solo nature of it," said Juber, who will give a free guitar clinic Wednesday at the Guitar Center in Sherman Oaks.

George Harrison's contributions to music and popular culture have been receiving so much deserved attention since he died Nov. 29 that it's easy to overlook the significant role he played in the movie world. On film, Harrison is best known for appearing as the sardonic, mop-top version of his Beatle self in "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!," but his most lasting movie work likely came behind the scenes. If you're a fan of Monty Python's "Life of Brian," you can thank Harrison.
