At 2 p.m. Thursday, the embargo on contacting NBA free agents was lifted. At 10 minutes after, Jerry West stuck his hand into a jar of Tootsie Rolls in his office, returned to his desk and reached for the phone. "Leonard Armato, please," West said. West is executive vice president of the Lakers. Armato is agent for Shaquille O'Neal. The pursuit had officially begun. Emphasis on begun. There was no "done deal." That very phrase made West livid.

Someone else either had a quicker dialing finger or a watch counting down to 2 p.m. in hundredths of a second, but Jerry West was not the first team official to speak with Shaquille O'Neal's agent when the NBA moratorium ended Thursday and the flood gates opened on NBA bidding. It was also the last time the Lakers were in a hole. Phil Jackson became the latest member of the Lakers' extended family to weigh in on Dwight Howard's departure. There was a barb or two, predictably, from the former Lakers coach. He took to Twitter to wish Howard well.   Reflection on DHoward's exodus. He left a distaste in Lakerland The Lakers will be fine. This was the beginning of the end, the first part of the last round of Shaquille O'Neal's greatest, grandest journey. The Lakers on Wednesday took a giant's step toward their first championship in a dozen seasons, lining up behind O'Neal and blasting the Indiana Pacers, 104-87, in Game 1 of the NBA finals before 18,997 at Staples Center. Yes, maybe the big-bang conclusion is near. Possibly, three or four games away.
