Cal State Fullerton got its fourth Big West Conference basketball victory Saturday night, and Coach Bob Hawking ended up with a shaved head. "I told the team if they got four, I'd do it," said Hawking, "and I lived up to my commitment." Freshman guard Kenroy Jarrett gave Hawking the haircut in the locker room immediately after the Titans, picked to finish last in the conference, won their third consecutive game and fourth in a row at home, 85-72, against New Mexico State.

A Colorado third-grader who shaved her head to express solidarity with a cancer-stricken friend may be exempted from a charter school's dress code that bans shaved heads. Jamie Renfro said Sunday that Caprock Academy in Grand Junction had asked her daughter, Kamryn, to stay away from campus until her hair grew back because she had violated its dress code. “We do sign that we understand and agree to the rules every year...but honestly, I never thought my 9-year-old daughter would do something so courageous, brave and selfless,” Renfro said in a public post on Facebook . She kept Kamryn at home on Monday and took her out with Delaney Clements, the 11-year-old friend who started chemotherapy last month, for the third time.

Almost every night at 10, you'll find heavy-metal rock 'n' rollers with long hair, pierced noses, tattoos, biker boots and leather jackets cruising the aisles of the Hollywood Ralphs on Sunset. It's not how you'd envision a rocker's natural habitat, but even headbangers have to eat. Sure, any 7-Eleven will do when you have a craving for beef jerky and Junior Mints, but metalheads do not live by preserved meat and candy alone.

As I was leaving the house this morning, I caught a brief "Today" show segment about a bunch of people who shaved their heads to show solidarity for a leukemia patient. Although this thoughtful gesture of support is hardly novel, what made it noteworthy was that one of those going all chrome dome was George H.W. Bush. The back story is that the 2-year-old patient Jason is the son of a member of Bush's Secret Service detail. When the toddler started to lose his hair because of treatments to battle the disease, his dad's co-workers -- and the 89-year-old former commander-in-chief -- decided to lose their locks as a show of support.

Police officers who have cut their hair to protest the plan to fire four officers involved in the fatal shooting of Tyisha Miller in December were ridiculed Monday by speakers at the weekly demonstration protesting her death. Among the critics was U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles), who told more than 100 rally participants: "Police officers who have shaved their heads must be made to understand they are symbols of skinheads . . . and they are racist."

Los Angeles City Fire Department Capt. Bruce Galien was talking to his wife on the phone from Fire Station No. 9 near skid row recently when she heard what she thought was a man in pain. It turned out to be firefighter Brian Hampton, singing along to a heavy metal song blasting from the radio. "She asked: 'Is that guy all right?' Galien recalled Wednesday with a laugh. But behind his laughter now is a deep concern for Hampton, 33, who has been found to have testicular cancer.

Hundreds of traditional healers shaved their heads in a long-simmering dispute over control of South Korea's multimillion-dollar herbal medicine market. Thirty others were on the 13th day of a hunger strike. The dispute, which began in 1993, is over whether pharmacists should be allowed to prescribe traditional methods--some using herbs, animal parts and acupuncture--which many South Koreans prefer to Western-based treatments.

Kellie Pickler shaved her head this week in a sign of solidarity with a close childhood friend facing cancer, and to raise awareness about early prevention of the disease. But the country singer might not know how many other cancer patients were moved by her gesture. Cancer patients endure a particular kind of hell when they lose their hair, said Nancy Lumb of Chevy Chase, Md. For many -- especially women -- it's the single hardest part of their battle. Lumb should know. She never cried when she was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. She stayed strong when she had to tell her husband, her friends and her family about the diagnosis.

Chuck Pagano has preached the value of relationships since taking over as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts back in January. The team showed Tuesday that their coach's words have gotten through. More than 30 players, coaches and staff members had their heads shaved in a show of support for Pagano, who was diagnosed with leukemia on Sept. 26. Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders Megan M. and Crystal Ann went above and beyond the call of duty Sunday to back their team. They shaved their heads in support of Colts Coach Chuck Pagano, who was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this season. Megan M. said two weeks ago that she would shave her head if Blue, the team mascot, could raise $10,000 for the Colts' "ChuckStrong" charity. Crystal Ann later said she would join her. Well, Blue raised $22,670 and Sunday, between the third and fourth quarter of the Colts' 20-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills at Indianapolis, their hair came off. Well done, ladies.

STOCKTON -- In the center of a starkly lighted wrestling ring, RJ Brewer glared at the overwhelmingly Latino crowd and spread the flag of Arizona across his back. Buff, mean, white and glistening with baby oil, he snatched the microphone from the referee. "I come from the greatest city in the United States: Phoenix, Arizona!" the wrestler yelled in English. "Phoenix is the only city with a woman in power with the guts to get into the president's face and address the real problem in this country!"
