The Rams took a quantum leap in the draft Sunday, beginning their day by selecting Sean Gilbert, the centerpiece defensive lineman they have so long been missing, and clinching the move by agreeing to terms on a long-term contract with him before the night was done. The deal, believed to be worth more than $7 million over five seasons, including a signing bonus of about $3 million, is expected to be finalized and announced this week, possibly as soon as this morning, Ram sources said.

Turning his back on exhibition performances, popular sentiment and the power-football philosophy he used to personify, Ram Coach Chuck Knox on Monday waived Marcus Dupree, the team's most impressive running back this summer. Dupree, who joined the Rams two years ago after an injury-caused five-year layoff from football, leaves the team as he seemed to be reaching a level close to what he enjoyed as a Mississippi high school legend.

Although the two sides are talking, it appears that second-round pick Steve Israel will miss at least the first night of the Rams' advance camp, scheduled to open today. As of Tuesday night, only Israel and fourth-round pick Shawn Harper had not agreed to terms among the Rams' 15 draft choices. Gary Uberstine, Israel's attorney, said negotiations continued Tuesday, but he did not foresee an agreement at least until today or later.

Although Coach Chuck Knox insists that the Rams plan to rotate their running backs, Cleveland Gary has emerged as the featured back. Gary has carried 36 times for 150 yards in the last two games, including 74 yards in 19 carries during the Rams' 18-10 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday. Robert Delpino carried only twice in those games, both times on Sunday, and one of those carries ended in a lost fumble.

Menswear hasn't changed much since the Duke of Windsor tied his famous knot. Today, though, there are clearly more options. For fall, classic suits and casual sport coats have been updated in bolder colors and richer fabrics. Knits, once strictly for active wear, are now prominent for dress. But it's the frivolities that give a twist to the traditional: the slightly wider neckties in unusual prints, the leather and reptile belts, the polka-dot and plaid pocket squares.

Coach Chuck Knox said he is pleased that most of the veterans had come in at their prescribed weights and that the first day of practices with veterans were crisp and to the point. Acknowledging that he has already begun fining players, Knox also praised tackle Gerald Perry, who reported one pound lighter than the suggested 308, and tailback Marcus Dupree, who reported much lighter than last season's weight of 240. "Everybody ought to be excited on the first day," Knox said.

No. 1 pick Sean Gilbert, who sprained his left ankle in Saturday's scrimmage with the San Diego Chargers, missed practice and will be held out of the team's exhibition season opener Thursday night in Seattle. Gilbert apparently suffered the injury early in the scrimmage but remained in the lineup for a handful of plays before being removed. Ram Coach Chuck Knox said Gilbert, the team's starting right defensive tackle, should miss about a week.

The two players brought in to spice up the Rams' running game will get a chance to do just that in the team's exhibition opener against the Cardinals at Phoenix Saturday night. First-round draft choice Jerome Bettis and third-round selection Russell White will play in the backfield together against the Cardinals. They will enter the game in the second quarter, Coach Chuck Knox said. "We want them to get enough work and want each of them to get a chance to carry the football," Knox said Thursday.

The Rams plan to put running back Robert Delpino on the injured-reserve list today to recover from the strained left knee ligaments he suffered in last Sunday's game. Delpino is expected to miss four weeks, Coach Chuck Knox said. With the Rams' bye week Oct. 25, Delpino will miss only three games if he stays on injured reserve the minimum four weeks. Knox indicated Wednesday that the Rams probably will activate rookie fullback Tim Lester off the practice squad to replace Delpino.
