Shawne Merriman once knocked four opposing players unconscious during a single high school football game. Can Nike make such a claim? Doubt it. Yet, the company is using "Lights Out" -- the nickname Merriman says he earned after that game -- as the name of one of its athletic apparel lines. That strikes a nerve with the former NFL star, who used the nickname throughout his career and performed a celebratory dance of the same name after sacks. And he's doing something about it. On Monday a lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court on behalf of Merriman's Lights Out Holdings LLC against Nike for trademark infringement and unfair competition.

Brett Favre's latest problem is his elbow. With the NFL investigating whether he sent lewd photos of himself to a Jets game hostess while he played for New York in 2008, Favre said Wednesday that his cherished, league-record streak of 289 consecutive starts could be in danger if the pain in his right elbow gets any worse. The 41-year-old quarterback did not practice with Minnesota on Wednesday, preferring to rest the tendinitis that flared up noticeably Monday night in the Vikings' 29-20 loss to the Jets.

San Diego Chargers rookie linebacker Larry English was recently asked to give back nearly $15,000 of his $9.9-million contract. Reason: The Chargers' tradition of having rookies pick up the tab for a team dinner. When the bill for the dinner arrived, it totaled $14,508.67. It would have barely cleared the $14,500 mark, but there was one order for raspberry sorbet. It might seem extravagant, but in relative terms, English got away cheaply. Shawne Merriman's rookie dinner reportedly cost him $32,000.

The Tennessee Titans are sticking with veteran Kerry Collins as their starting quarterback as long as the team keeps winning. "We're going to get Vince [Young] back, get his knee back, work with him, get him back involved in the offense," Coach Jeff Fisher said Monday. "But Kerry's going to go ahead and play for us until either he struggles or whatever else happens. Yeah, you saw by the way he played. In light of everything, it just makes sense to go with him." ------ Wide receiver Steve Smith returned to the Carolina Panthers after his two-game suspension for breaking a teammate's nose in a training camp fight.

Denying reports that he could be risking a career-threatening knee injury, San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has decided to play this season. Merriman, 24, who reached the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons, has consulted with five specialists around the country who reportedly have recommended he sit out the season and undergo surgery to repair damage to his posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments. "To be as simple as possible, I just want to play football," Merriman said.

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell worked out with the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, two days after Donovan McNabb was benched in the closing minutes of a loss to Detroit. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said Russell was one of many players, including at least one other quarterback ( J.P. Losman ), who were getting a look from the team. "We'll evaluate him and everyone else out there," Shanahan said. The Redskins routinely invite out-of-work players for workouts on Tuesdays, but the timing of Russell's visit only added to the team's quarterback drama of the last few days.

The San Diego Chargers must play their next four games without outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, one of the NFL's top young players who decided Tuesday not to appeal his suspension for testing positive for steroids. Merriman's suspension is another blow to one of the NFL's toughest defenses, which has been hit by injuries and off-field trouble since before the season started. Merriman will sit out games at home against Cleveland, at Cincinnati, at Denver and at home against Oakland.

Michael Crabtree is confident he can play a big role for the San Francisco 49ers as a rookie even though he's months behind. He will get his chances in an offense that could really use him. Crabtree signed a six-year contract early Wednesday after a drawn-out negotiation process that had some wondering whether the star wide receiver would ever show up this season. "It's a lot of relief off my shoulders," Crabtree said when formally introduced at team headquarters.

Shawne Merriman is finally with the San Diego Chargers in training camp after signing his one-year tender contract. Merriman, 26, was made a restricted free agent when the Chargers offered him the tender in the off-season. The linebacker was absent from camp until Friday, when he joined the team for a walkthrough in preparation for Saturday's exhibition opener against the Chicago Bears. Merriman isn't expected to be ready to play until at least the third exhibition game, versus Dallas on Aug. 21. The Maryland product, taken with the 12th overall pick in 2005, is coming off an unspectacular year that saw him record four sacks in 14 games, this after a knee injury caused him to sit out all but one game in 2008.
