Will this be the year that Chicago Cubs shortstop Shawon Dunston fulfills his potential and great expectations? Dunston thinks so. Cub Manager Don Zimmer hopes so. And some of the rival managers in the National League are beginning to show respect for Dunston, the No. 1 pick in the June, 1982, draft and the highest amateur pick in New York City history. "Yes, I'd say this is his hump year, I certainly hope so," Zimmer said.

The surprising start of the San Francisco Giants has doused the firestorm that greeted new General Manager Brian Sabean's decision to trade Matt Williams last winter. The deal brought the Giants three-fourths of their infield and a valuable relief pitcher in Joe Roa. Sabean said at the time that he wasn't an idiot, and many people are now apologizing for thinking and saying he was. He also guaranteed that the Giants would be the most improved team in baseball, and they are.

In the days of artificial turf and large fielding gloves, the triple has almost become extinct. But for one game, at least, Shawon Dunston of the Chicago Cubs revived the exciting play. Dunston tied a modern-day record with three triples Saturday night at Montreal, including one in the three-run ninth that enabled the Cubs to break a tie and beat the Expos, 10-7. The last player to hit three triples in a game was Houston's Craig Reynolds, in 1981.

Jim Morrison said he wasn't upset when he was lifted for a pinch batter in the 17th inning of the suspended game, before Barry Bonds delivered a game-winning single in a 10-8 victory. Morrison came back in the regularly scheduled game with four hits including a home run Monday to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates and Rick Rhoden to a 10-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs. "I understand, I figured it was going to come," said Morrison. "Barry made the most of it. It was good for Barry to get the hit."

The depth chart on Manager Tom Trebelhorn's office wall at the Chicago Cubs' spring stadium lists four shortstops. Two, Jose Vizcaino and Rey Sanchez, have done most of the playing for the Cubs during the last two seasons. A third, Jose Hernandez, is an insurance policy formerly of the Texas Ranger and Cleveland Indian organizations, still young enough at 24 to generate interest among scouts.

Sometimes, as Shawon Dunston has learned, all it takes to put these playoffs into perspective is a phone call. Sunday, just before the Chicago Cubs took the field for the year's final game in St. Louis, the phone rang in the visitors' clubhouse. Shortstop Dunston was summoned. It was his wife Tracie, who was three months pregnant. She was feeling bad, experiencing symptoms that often indicate fetal distress. Dunston rushed from the stadium to the hotel across the street where Tracie was resting.
