As 14-year-old Jaycee Dugard struggled in a crude backyard shed to deliver her baby daughter, the serial predator who had abducted and raped her stepped in to unwrap the umbilical cord that trapped the infant. "She was beautiful," Dugard said of the child she birthed three years into her captivity in Northern California. "I felt like I wasn't alone anymore. I knew I could never let anything happen to her. " In an exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer broadcast Sunday on ABC, Dugard, displaying remarkable poise and smiling often, provided chilling details about the 18-year ordeal she endured at the hands of her captors, an increasingly deranged parolee named Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, who aided the abduction and condoned his rapes.

When singer Roy Orbison was touring England in 1968, it had been four years since he last appeared at the top of the charts with "Oh, Pretty Woman," even though he continued playing live and recording long after the pulse of rock music shifted away from his signature brand of sweepingly operatic pop. At a show in Leeds on that tour, he met 18-year-old German fan Barbara Ann Marie Wellhoener Jakobs, and within a year the two were married....

As an East Coast "experimental" playwright, I'm often faced with disbelief when I tell my peers that I landed a staff job on NBC's new series "Smash. " Partially it's the strange-bedfellows notion of an allegedly avant-garde writer paired with a big, glitzy TV show about Broadway produced by Steven Spielberg. Even more prevalent, however, is the perception among theater folk that writing TV is slumming, or torturous, or at the very least a cynical sellout. It's a cliché, but it doesn't come from nowhere.

The big question about Rene Russo in "The Thomas Crown Affair" is not about her on-screen nudity, but who did her hair? The film hasn't even opened yet, but already Russo's do by L.A. stylist Enzo Angileri is attracting lots of buzz. The layered look seems poised to join Dorothy Hamill's bowl, Farrah Fawcett's wings and Jennifer Aniston's wisps in hair history.

The yellowing government survey map of San Nicolas Island dated from 1879, but it was quite clear: There was a big black dot on the southwest coast and, next to it, the words "Indian Cave. " For more than 20 years, Navy archaeologist Steve Schwartz searched for that cave. It was believed to be home to the island's most famous inhabitant, a Native American woman who survived on the island for 18 years, abandoned and alone, and became the inspiration for "Island of the Blue Dolphins," one of the 20th century's most popular novels for young readers.

When in pain, pray. When you worry, worship. When in grief, share it in your small group. The Facebook post, sent in the early morning hours Friday by famed pastor Rick Warren, was short on words but deep in meaning. Since the suicide death of his son a week earlier, the pastor of Orange County's sprawling Saddleback Church has indeed been sharing his grief. But his "small group" includes not only his parishioners, but nearly a million Twitter followers as well as those who read his Facebook page.

The drive down Pasadena's Del Mar Boulevard under a canopy of ultraviolet-blue jacarandas has lost none of its effect on Roland Clements after all these years. Clements first saw the blooming trees that gracefully line the boulevard in 1984 when he moved here from central Florida. He dreamed then of making his home on the postcard-perfect roadway. Five years ago, the real estate agent moved into a restored Craftsman with an inviting front porch.

Coconut milk used to be something that came in a can and was good to have on hand for making pina coladas or Thai curries. These days, coconut milk can also be found in cartons in the milk aisle and in pints in the ice cream section — and as yogurt, coffee creamer and even kefir. Some consumers are turning to coconut-milk products because they're eager for a new dairy alternative, but others are switching to them in the belief that they promote weight loss. Consumers should be aware that the evidence in support of such claims is very slim — and that coconut milk in any form is high in saturated fat, says Ruth Frechman, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Assn.

Sara Gilbert of "The Talk" is engaged to Linda Perry, her girlfriend of more than a year, the co-host announced Monday on the show. The proposal, which was elaborate, is best captured by the notoriously shy Gilbert herself, who shares the event in the video down below -- definitely worth watching to hear all the intricacies. Be warned: It involves a love song, a breakup song, a picnic, a guitarist, a daydream, a string section and horns, T-shirts, moms, friends and musician John Waite.
