Joseph J. Honick's letter (Sept. 21), "Motorcyclists Make Freeways Dangerous," is such an absurd example of crippled logic, I can't believe it even warranted space in your newspaper. Anyone who uses the freeway system knows what the real trouble is, and it has nothing to do with the relatively few motorcyclists who brave what is definitely sheer peril out there. The problem, Mr. Honick, is that there are too many cars. If you, and several thousand of your fellow four-wheel freeway cloggers would discover the exhilaration, economy, convenience and space-saving attributes of motorcycle commuting, we'd all enjoy less traffic and lower blood pressure.

Dee Dee Penny has a real penchant for black vintage garb, such as high-waisted glamazon shorts and sheer mesh tops, and second-skin leather jackets and mini-dresses. It's a gothic-meets-go-go-girl look that signals a readily identifiable aesthetic for Penny - and one that might work well for an indie pop band. Enter the Dum Dum Girls. Penny (born Kristin Gundred in San Leandro, Calif.) created the Girls as a solo project in 2008. Now she's the fashionable frontwoman of a five-member group, comprising drummer Sandra Vu, bassist Malia James and guitarists Jules Medeiros and Andrew Miller, on tour to promote their third studio album, "Too True," released on Sub Pop Records in January.

Gray is the new black. Night, the new day. Rain, the new sun. Clouds gather, shadows linger. The Oscar-nominated cinematographers' images fill the screen with a beauty only possible in worlds gone monochromatic, turning the most elemental of color palettes stunningly rich, subtly vibrant. Incredible combinations of charcoal, smoke, gunmetal and slate. Philippe Le Sourd for "The Grandmaster," Emmanuel Lubezki for "Gravity," Bruno Delbonnel for "Inside Llewyn Davis," Phedon Papamichael for "Nebraska," Roger A. Deakins for "Prisoners" - veterans all. Men all. And though they each have the capacity to shoot softness and light, the varied universes captured through their lenses this year speak to the wonder of black.

Gov. Deukmejian deserves to be commended on his veto of the bilingual bill. Rob Ryan needs to get a haircut if he ever wants to become a head coach in the NFL. So says Chris Mortensen, who reported Monday on ESPN's "NFL Insiders" that "several NFL executives," including an owner, told him as much about the New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator and his flowing silver locks. "It is about image for these guys," Mortensen said . "They want a CEO-type. That's what they want. " We're talking about a guy with quite a resume here -- he's been the defensive coordinator for four NFL teams and this year lifted a Saints team that ranked 32nd in the league in yards allowed and 31st in points given up before he got there to fourth in both categories.

WASHINGTON - One is a former Texas talk-radio host who had never held public office until he won a seat in Congress in the 2010 tea party wave. Another is an MIT-educated inventor who has all but shelved his scientific pursuits to reinvent government. Others are back-bench, right-wing lawmakers who have served in Congress for years but suddenly find their once far-afield views have more currency within their party. These are the House Republicans who have convinced Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio)

Fancy a pout like Sophia Loren, Marlene Dietrich or Courtney Love? From ladylike ruby to femme fatale orange-red to renegade bordeaux, the looks of these style icons showed up on the fall fashion runways, albeit in a very modern reprise. Fall's bold new red lip colors come in a range of formulations. Tom Ford's "Crimson Noir" Lip Color is a deeply saturated lipstick, while ILIA Beauty's "Heart Beat" lip gloss, inspired by Joan Jett's band the Runaways, is shiny and sheer. The reds in the new Marc Jacobs Beauty collection come in the form of LoveMarc Lip Gels, gel-based lipsticks, and Lust for Lacquer Lip Vinyls, color-drenched lip glosses.

Lululemon Athletica Inc.'s black yoga pants may have made a comeback after being recalled for being too sheer, but the same can't be said for the company's chief executive, Christine Day. Five and a half years after taking over the helm at the Vancouver, Canada, yoga wear brand, Day will step down once a replacement is found, Lululemon said in a statement Monday. Board members formed a search committee to find Day's successor but decided to announce her departure to ensure “a healthy transition period,” the company said.

The gown that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the world premiere of "Iron Man 3" last week in L.A. has gotten a lot of buzz, mostly negative. The Antonio Berardi dress is boat-necked with bell sleeves, but it was the skirt that got all the attention, with sheer panels revealing the sides of Paltrow's body from the top of her hip to her ankle. Now the actress' stylist Elizabeth Saltzman defends the choice to Us Weekly, calling the dress "elegant," and saying it showed spirit -- as well as the fruits of Paltrow's labors at the gym. Lululemon Athletica Inc.'s problem isn't just that a batch of its black yoga pants were made too sheer and had to be recalled - the popular retailer is now downgrading its financial predictions and watching its stock do a downward dog. The Vancouver, B.C., company said late Monday that it pulled the women's pants from its stores and e-commerce sites over the weekend after learning that the material was too revealing. The Luon fabric is produced in Vietnam and Taiwan and made with a mix of nylon and Lycra spandex fibers.
