But to find the nation's leader in all-purpose yardage, one must know the way to San Jose, where tailback Sheldon Canley of San Jose State has 1,665 yards--948 rushing, 258 receiving and 459 on kickoff returns.

Lompoc took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when quarterback Jim Hall scored on a one-yard run, capping a six-play, 48-yard drive. In the second quarter, Sheldon Canley scored on a 15-yard run and a 45-yard punt return. KEY PLAYERS Tailback Sheldon Canley (L) rang up 80 yards on 15 carries, scoring two TDs from scrimmage and another on a punt return. Jim Hall (L) completed four of six passes for 64 yards.

Mark Barsotti completed only 13 of 30 passes, but they accounted for 334 yards as Fresno State routed Utah, 31-7, Saturday night in a nonconference game at Salt Lake City. Aaron Craver scored twice for the Bulldogs (3-0) against the Utes (2-1). San Jose State 28, Pacific 14--Sheldon Canley rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and the Spartans' Ralph Martini threw for 314 yards in a Big West victory at Stockton.

Freshman running back Sheldon Canley, who rushed 33 times for 304 yards and 5 touchdowns for Allan Hancock College last Saturday, has been named Western State Conference offensive player of the week. Canley led Hancock to a 35-3 win over Porterville. Glendale sophomore Don Scott, who made 11 unassisted tackles, recovered one fumble and deflected two passes, was selected the WSC's defensive player of the week.

San Jose State withstood a late rally by the University of the Pacific and held on for a 41-32 victory Saturday in a Big West Conference game. Pacific (0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference) scored 25 points in about 15 minutes, covering both the third and fourth quarters to cut San Jose's lead to 34-32. San Jose fullback Johnny Johnson, who tied his school record with four touchdowns, added the game's final score, a five-yard run with 22 seconds to play.

UNLV 35, San Jose State 31--Bob Stockham hit Demond Thompkins for on a five-yard touchdown pass with 47 seconds left to lift the Rebels (4-4, 2-2) over the Spartans at Las Vegas. Nathan DuPree set a school rushing record by gaining 286 yards in 43 carries for San Jose State (5-3, 2-1). The record of 253 yards was set by Sheldon Canley two years ago against the Rebels.

San Jose State tailback Sheldon Canley was named Big West Conference offensive player of the year, Spartan linebacker Lynell Mayo and Fresno State free safety Marquez Pope shared defensive player of the year honors, and San Jose's Terry Shea was named coach of the year in a vote of conference coaches Monday. Cal State Fullerton running back Reggie Yarbrough, punter Phil Nevin and defensive lineman Gary Thornton made the second team.

A winning record and a share of second place in the Big West Conference will be at stake when Cal State Fullerton finishes its season today against San Jose State. Fullerton, 5-4-1 overall and 4-2 in the conference, has not finished better than .500 since 1985. San Jose State (5-4, 4-1) is alone in second place with two games remaining. Utah State and Nevada Las Vegas also have two losses.

Aaron Craver and Myron Jones, two junior college transfers from Southern California, led a Fresno State rushing attack that gained a season-high 424 yards as the undefeated Bulldogs beat Nevada Las Vegas, 31-17, Saturday night in a Big West Conference game at Fresno. The Bulldogs, who have won 15 in a row, improved to 8-0 overall this season and 5-0 in the conference to set up next Saturday night's Big West showdown against San Jose State in Fresno.

Tailback Sheldon Canley ran for 208 yards and two touchdowns as San Jose State overcame a slow start and beat winless New Mexico State, 34-6, Saturday to keep its Big West title hopes alive. The Spartans (4-3 and 3-0) will play Fresno State next week in a game that likely will decide the Big West champion. The Aggies (0-8 and 0-4) have not won a conference game since 1986 and own the longest losing streak in Division I-A--14 games.
