Sheldon Price had jitters. It would have been strange if he didn't. Price, who was playing cornerback at La Puente Bishop Amat last season, was about to make his college starting debut for UCLA. The elongated Price knew his 6-foot-2, 160-pound frame was on the Kansas State game plan. "I had a feeling they would pick on me early," Price said. "I told myself, 'Just make plays, just make tackles, it will stop eventually.' " It didn't. Kansas State kept coming at Price throughout Saturday's 23-9 UCLA victory.

UCLA lost three senior starters from the defensive secondary, and it was not a unit that overly distinguished itself in 2012. Help is on the way. Nowhere is UCLA's depth more precarious than at cornerback. Nowhere is UCLA's future more secure than at cornerback. What seems to be a contradiction meshes with the shot-term need and the long-term benefit of playing freshmen. Starting cornerbacks Aaron Hester and Sheldon Price are capable, but both are seniors. Behind them are freshmen Marcus Rios and Fabian Moreau , who are expected to receive more playing time because another freshman, Ishmael Adams , is facing season-ending shoulder surgery.

Everyone is talking about USC's receivers. Everybody will be watching UCLA's cornerbacks. Can USC's Marqise Lee and Robert Woods be stopped? Are UCLA's Aaron Hester and Sheldon Price the ones to do it? Bruins Coach Jim Mora has said he would put USC's receivers "up against any all-time. " The players he puts up against them have struggled this season. "We have been tested a lot," Hester said. "This is kind of like the SATs. " The PSAT didn't go so well. Lowly Washington State ran up 457 yards passing and nearly chased down the Bruins in a 44-36 win last week.

More people were watching practice Tuesday than UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel would prefer. Cornerback Sheldon Price … strong safety Dalton Hilliard … F-back Anthony Barr . All sat out with injuries, and add to that a handful of players in red, no-contact jerseys. Price sat with a sprained right knee and Hilliard with a sprained left shoulder. Safety Tony Dye (shoulder injury) and cornerback Andrew Abbott (concussion), both of whom missed the Oregon State game, were given limited clearance to practice.

UCLA cornerback Marcus Rios will undergo a sinus procedure this week and will miss Saturday's game against Arizona State. Rios, a freshman, has been suffering from migraine headaches for three weeks. He has had similar sinus problems in the past. The Bruins have used Rios in five games as a backup to starters Aaron Hester and Sheldon Price, both seniors. Fabien Moreau, another freshman, is the only backup who has played cornerback this season. Safety Andrew Abbott has played cornerback in the past.

Well, it was a victory. UCLA was expecting a lot more for its money. But $425,000 doesn't seem to go as far as it once did. San Jose State was hired as fodder, getting a hefty guarantee to come south. But the Spartans — winners of three games the past two seasons — almost added a little red-face to the Bruins powder-blue and gold color scheme. UCLA finally figured out who it was playing, picking up a 27-17 victory at the Rose Bowl by getting 10 points in the final seven minutes to prevent an 0-2 start and a whole lot of embarrassing questions.

There is simplicity in what UCLA faces Thursday. Arizona will throw, with quarterback Nick Foles moving the ball around like he's playing hacky sack. He is second nationally in yards passing, averaging 375.83 per game. Foles is the poster boy for a college football trend. "The reason for the proliferation of pass numbers going on around the country is everyone is playing catch," UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel said. "There are lots of swing passes and screens that have made the numbers climb monstrously high.

PULLMAN, Wash. - Now UCLA players can dare to think about USC, and dare to dream. The Bruins were hardly impressive Saturday. They hardly had to be. Beating Washington State seems the inalienable right of every Pac-12 team this season. So the Bruins' herky-jerky 44-36 at victory Martin Stadium cleared the way for more important matters . . . the Trojans and the South Division title. Brett Hundley threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns. The Bruins got big plays from the special teams, resulting in 14 points.

USC is coming. USC is coming. UCLA players can talk all they want about Washington State, their opponent this week, but facts are facts. An opportunity that has been absent for nearly two decades is so close the Bruins can't ignore it. Beating USC in two weeks could mean more than just beating USC. "We can see the prize," senior cornerback Sheldon Price said. That being? "The Pac-12 championship game," Price said. UCLA players talked about Washington State late Saturday night after a resounding 66-10 victory over Arizona, which beat the Trojans, 39-36, on Oct. 27. The Bruins travel to Pullman this week to face the Cougars, who have yet to win a Pac-12 game.

UCLA defensive players stole the spotlight from the offense during an uneven, 37-6 victory over Houston on Saturday night. Linebacker Eric Kendricks returned a botched lateral 23 yards for the Bruins' first touchdown. Cornerback Sheldon Price tied a UCLA record by intercepting three passes. And defensive end Datone Jones , making a cameo at tight end, caught a seven-yard touchdown pass. Price's performance was a big I'm-back moment. He missed the Nebraska game after suffering a concussion.

UCLA's bad luck on its offensive line looked as if it had struck again Tuesday when guard Chris Ward was carted off the field because of an ankle injury. After X-rays and an examination, it was determined to be a sprain and the school announced his status was day to day. "We've got our fingers crossed that he will be back shortly," Coach Rick Neuheisel said. The Bruins have had injuries to a couple of key linemen in the last year. Guard Jeff Baca is still recovering from a broken ankle, suffered in spring practice.

Tyler Gonzalez's college athletic career got considerably more interesting Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. Gonzalez, a senior, spent the last two falls as the manager for the UCLA men's soccer team. Yet there he was, suddenly being depended on to kick field goals and extra points in a Pacific 12 Conference football game between the Bruins and Washington State. Gonzalez hadn't taken part in a football game since his senior year at Fullerton High, when he made six field goals and 22 conversion kicks.

Houston came along at the right time. UCLA needed a patsy, a team that had no chance of winning no matter how poorly the Bruins played, and the Cougars stepped right up. The Bruins' 37-6 victory at the Rose Bowl will look impressive in the books, especially to those on the East Coast who probably passed on the 10:30 p.m. start. But this was lurching along to the inevitable. There were flashes of the type of offense and defense that has pushed the Bruins back into the polls.
