For Cal State Fullerton soccer player Sheldon Thomas, the Caribbean island of Trinidad was a long way from being a land of opportunity. "College there is for the very intelligent," he said. "There weren't a lot of schools there I could get into." And, he said, "there weren't a lot of good jobs . . . " But it wasn't easy to leave behind family and friends where he was born and grew up, even though Thomas decided it was the best thing for him to do.

The Waves scored two first-half and two second-half goals to beat the Connecticut Wolves, 4-1, in an A-League soccer game Sunday at Santa Ana Stadium in front of 1,211. Starters Nick Theslof and Sheldon Thomas scored first-half goals six minutes apart to give the Waves a 2-0 lead. The Wolves pulled to within 2-1 on Shaun Mealis' goal in the 78th minute, but Wave substitutes Colby Jackson and Steve Patterson scored in the final seven minutes to seal the victory.

Cal State Fullerton has signed five high school soccer players for next season, including one whose father played for Coach Al Mistri in high school. Jose Dumond of Redlands, whose father Joe played for Mistri at La Verne Damien High, played at San Bernardino Aquinas High last season as a midfielder. Joe Dumond also played for the Titans in the early 1970s. Mistri also signed defender Ray Ramirez of Chino Don Lugo High. "He's an impact player," Mistri said.

Keiichi Yamamoto scored two goals to help 17th-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat American, 4-2, in the Coca-Cola Classic men's soccer tournament Sunday in Charlottesville, Va. Yamamoto broke a 1-1 tie with a goal with about 15 minutes left in the first half. His second goal came about 17 minutes into the second half and put Fullerton ahead, 3-1. Sheldon Thomas, who scored Fullerton's first goal, was the tournament most valuable player. Tom Helmer also scored for the Titans (3-0-1).

Duncan Oughton and Sheldon Thomas had second half goals as host Cal State Fullerton defeated Loyola Marymount, 3-1, in a nonconference men's soccer game Thursday. The victory stopped the Titans' four-game losing streak. Loyola Marymount's Adam Stockman scored with 10 minutes left in the first half to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Oughton, a transfer from New Zealand who missed the first month of the season with a leg injury, tied the score on a header eight minutes later.

Cal State Fullerton beat Santa Clara, 2-1, on goals by Alessio Smith and Sheldon Thomas in the final round of the Reebok Invitational men's soccer tournament Sunday in front of 1,093 at Titan Field. Smith scored from 20 yards off an assist from Marco Mesrobian at the 38-minute mark. Then, at 70 minutes, Thomas scored from 20 yards also on an assist from Mesrobian. Santa Clara scored in the 80th minute on a goal by Adam Eyre.

Jason Boyce, a Washington forward from Corona del Mar High, and Cal State Fullerton's Sheldon Thomas have repeated as division players of the year in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Boyce, a senior who has led Huskies to a 15-2-2 record with 15 goals and 32 points, was selected the Mountain Division player of the year for the second consecutive season, as was Thomas in the Pacific Division. Thomas, a senior forward from Trinidad, led the Titans with 27 points in 1997.

Sheldon Thomas scored the first goal for Cal State Fullerton and the Titans were helped by an own goal by Sam Franklin to tie top-ranked Virginia, 2-2, in the Coca-Cola Classic men's soccer tournament Saturday at Charlottesville, Va. Franklin, trying to clear a corner kick by Alessio Smith in the first half, accidentally headed it into the net to make it 2-2.

Cypress setter Laura Woiemberghe orally committed to Cal State Northridge to play volleyball, her high school coach, Jerry Gregg, said. She was the Empire League's player of the year the last two seasons. Gregg, who led Cypress to five league titles in his eight seasons there, retired Friday. He led the Centurions to their third consecutive league title last season before Cypress lost to Foothill in the second round of the playoffs.

Sheldon Thomas of Cal State Fullerton has been chosen Pacific Division men's soccer player of the year in the Mountain Pacific Sports Assn., a school spokesman said Tuesday. Thomas, a junior transfer from El Camino College, is the team's leading scorer with 17 goals and five assists. He is tied for 16th nationally for most points and ranks 13th for most goals.
