Two years ago at the Masters track and field meet, Shelly Tochluk of Westminster High School finished seventh in the 400 meters, two places away from qualifying for the State meet. Tochluk, however, was not too disappointed. After all, Tochluk was only a sophomore. There were more great track times ahead during her junior year, right? Wrong. Tochluk did not even qualify for the Southern Section preliminaries in what she called a "disastrous" junior season. "To be perfectly honest, I thought I was really good last year," she said.

Part of being a freshman runner is sitting in the blocks while the runners are announced, the names of others accompanied by their honors. "When you're a freshman, there's nothing before or after your name," said Desiree Bracey, one of UC Irvine's two outstanding freshman sprinters. "They say, 'In Lane 4, such and such--NCAA qualifier, or Big West champion. I want them to say something about me next year." Bracey and Shelly Tochluk already have marked their names in Irvine history.

Two years ago as a sophomore, Allison Franke of Canyon High School would wake up on the mornings of track and field competitions and immediately begin a psyche-up routine. "I'd wake up, go to the mirror, look into my eyes and say to myself, "OK, let's do it, let's win, " she said. Franke, a senior who now "just lays around and watches TV before meets," relates that story with a slightly embarrassed smile, as if she's somewhat uncomfortable that at one time she did something a bit silly.
