Southern California Development Forum is presenting its annual real estate forecast, "What's Hot for 1999," from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Jan. 12 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City. Speaking at the conference will be Andy Ratner of brokerage firm Cushman Realty Corp., capital markets expert Gary Mozer of George Smith Partners and Larry J. Kosmont of real estate consulting firm Kosmont & Associates. Admission is $40 at the door for nonmembers.

Five San Fernando Valley community activists were selected Wednesday as finalists for the 2002 Fernando Award. The nominations were announced during a luncheon at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City. The nominees are: political consultant Jill Banks Barad of Sherman Oaks, businessman Sheldon I. Mende of Encino, attorney and real estate broker William F. Powers Jr. of Chatsworth, businesswoman Ruth Richter of Winnetka and newspaper publisher Kathleen Sterling of Woodland Hills.

This year's recipient of the Fernando Award, given annually to a San Fernando Valley resident for outstanding community service, will be honored at a dinner tonight at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City. Clyde Porter, 68, a Woodland Hills businessman, is the recipient of the award presented by a committee composed of representatives of Valley chambers of commerce and other community organizations. Porter is president of P.L. Porter Co.

Mayor Richard Riordan will be the keynote speaker at an awards breakfast this morning sponsored by an association of Valley developers at the Sheraton Universal Hotel. The Valley Development Forum will present awards of excellence to several local projects at its fifth annual awards breakfast. According to David Silver, a board director of the forum, the group's top prize will go to the Disney Development Co.'s Feature Animation Building in Burbank.

Decked out in sequins and bow ties, 500 William S. Hart High School students were whisked to their prom in the sort of carriages usually reserved for tour groups and gamblers. No need to ask Dad for the car keys. They rode buses--12 47-seat luxury coaches hired by the Newhall school to reduce the cost of prom night and the risks of drinking and driving. Only students who rode the bus were allowed to attend Saturday night's affair at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in North Hollywood.

Schniepp will discuss developments along the 101 Corridor and present a forecast for the local economy in a presentation titled "2001-101, a Space Odyssey."

State Assembly Speaker Cruz Bustamante (D-Fresno) will give the keynote address at the Valley Industry and Commerce Assn.'s 20th annual awards dinner Thursday. The event will also honor Browning-Ferris Industries with an award for commitment and service to the greater San Fernando Valley. BFI President and CEO Bruce Ranck will accept the Robert E. Gibson Corporate Award for Excellence at the dinner, which is open to the public.
