On the dreariest of the gray mornings of this so-called summer, Sherri Hall awoke early for the training runs that help her organize another grueling day. "(Running) just keeps me healthy and strong," Hall said. "It gives me energy for everything I have to do in the day." And that is plenty. A single mother of two, Hall usually runs before her shift as a registered nurse at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital.

The Cal State Fullerton cross-country team won the men's university division and finished fourth in the women's university division at the Titans' cross-country invitational Saturday at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea. UCLA won the women's division. Fullerton's men were led by Steve Frisone, who finished fourth on the eight-kilometer course with a time of 25 minutes 43 seconds, Ray Tujillo (5th, 25:59) and Mike Richardson (6th, 26:02). Shannon Winkleman of UC Riverside was first (25:22).

Top-ranked UC Irvine defeated UC Santa Barbara, 15-5, at Heritage Park in a Big West conference water polo match Saturday. Julian Harvey had five goals, Tom Warde had four and Dan Smoot had three to lead Irvine, which improved to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in conference. It was Irvine's sixth consecutive victory. UC Santa Barbara dropped to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in conference. In California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Sherri Hall of Southern California College finished ninth in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics cross-country championships Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. Hall, who is 39 and is her final season of cross-country eligibility, covered the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes 19 seconds 35 seconds behind winner Sarah Howell of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. The first 25 finishers have NAIA All-American status.

UC Irvine's water polo team split 2 games in the Cal State Long Beach Invitational Saturday at Belmont Plaza pool in Long Beach. The Anteaters, ranked sixth in the country, defeated Stanford, 8-7, in the first game then lost to second-ranked Cal, 15-10, in the second game of the round-robin tournament.

UC Irvine's Tom Warde scored his 100th goal this season, the third highest total in Anteater water polo history, as Irvine closed out its Big West Conference season with a 12-8 victory over UC Santa Barbara at Heritage Park in Irvine Saturday. Warde, a junior who attended Marina High School, had 6 goals in the match to place him behind Gary Figueroa (110) and Mike Evans (102) in the single-season scoring records at Irvine.

Todd Gragnano, formerly of Los Alamitos High, has enrolled at Chapman University and will play football, Coach Ken Visser said Tuesday. Gragnano, a junior quarterback, went to Nebraska in 1990 and spent two seasons there, throwing one pass. He transferred to Louisville before the 1992 season. Gragnano is one of four quarterbacks enrolled at Chapman.

Southern California College's Sherri Hall finished second to Jenee Ellis of Azusa Pacific in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 women's cross-country championships Saturday at Morley Field in San Diego. It was only the second time in six meetings that Ellis has defeated Hall, and both victories have come on the five-kilometer course at Morley Field.

Top-ranked UC San Diego had its 41-match winning streak against Division III opponents stopped when unranked LaVerne College defeated the Tritons 15-13, 15-13, 16-14 in a nonleague women's volleyball match at LaVerne (14-9) Saturday. UCSD (24-6), the two-time defending national champion, had not lost to a Division III team since October 1986, when it lost to Menlo College. Cal Lutheran defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 15-12, 12-15, 15-12, 15-11, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match.

Buffy Rabbitt won the women's individual competition to lead UC Irvine to a first-place finish Saturday in the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Cross-Country Invitational. Rabbitt finished the 5,000-meter course with a time of 16 minutes 27 seconds. UC Irvine's men finished fifth with the club team Gardena Runners taking first. Mike Nielson (25:12) was the top finisher for the Anteaters, finishing 21st on the five-mile course. Danny Gonzales (24:18) of the club team Reebok Aggies was first.
