Israeli Finance Minister Shimon Peres, 66, left a hospital Monday after a 13-day treatment for a urinary tract infection, a hospital official said. "He was treated with antibiotics, first intravenously, then orally," said the deputy hospital director, Dr. Udi Cantor. "He has recovered completely and his general condition is very good."

The architect of Israel's peace accords with the Palestinians, Shimon Peres, said he is "ashamed as a Jew . . . as an Israeli" at the hardships Palestinians face four years after interim peace deals. The former prime minister was speaking before the inauguration in Tel Aviv of the Peres Center for Peace, a private institute he has established to promote peace.

Former Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin said Saturday that he will challenge Shimon Peres for leadership of the left-leaning Labor Party, and polls indicated that Rabin could lead the party to victory. A poll published Friday in the Yediot Ahronot newspaper showed Rabin defeating caretaker Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir of the right-wing Likud Party by a 2-1 margin if direct elections for Israel's leader were held.
