The Italian Merchant Navy ministry countered initial reports that an Italian freighter rammed and sank a cruise ship outside the Greek port of Piraeus, leaving two of its crew members dead, a 14-year-old passenger missing and 72 injured. The ministry said the freighter, Adige, had been stationary for 10 minutes Friday outside the entrance to the harbor, "waiting for the Greek pilot to come aboard to guide the ship in its docking maneuver."

A Greek cruise ship with as many as 750 people on board, including 475 British students and teachers, collided with an Italian freighter and sank near shore Friday, officials said. Two Greek seamen were killed and 14 other people were reported missing. Small boats picked up the panicked high school students who jumped or fell into the water from the Jupiter, a 6,300-ton cruise ship, as it sank less than a mile from Piraeus harbor, said an official with the Merchant Marine Ministry.
