The Los Angeles Unified School District has hired more than 750 of the 1,000 security aides it decided to employ after the mass shooting last year at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. The aides, equipped with radios, keep watch during school hours, reporting potential threats and other problems to administrators, district spokesman Tom Waldman said. The district announced in January that it would spend about $4 million to hire 1,087 aides. The move followed the December shooting deaths of 26 people, including 20 first-graders, at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The crew of "NCIS: Los Angeles" was in the middle of filming a scene on the Venice boardwalk when a man wearing only his underwear and a cape rode by on his bicycle shouting obscenities. On another occasion, a stranger wielding a plastic light saber showed up on the set and challenged one of the actors to a duel, temporarily halting production. "Those kind of things continually go on in Venice, but we love going down there because it's so colorful and captures the essence of what people think Southern California is — the beaches, the sunshine, the palms and the craziness," said Tony Salome, location manager for the crime drama starring Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J. Venice Beach, a storied cinematic backdrop since the silent film era, continues to play a starring role in Hollywood.

It appears that a lot of people, including me, believe that LAPD's SIS unit operates as a death squad. There is nothing in the law that gives police the authority to lie in wait for a crime to be committed and then to proceed to execute the suspects, bypassing all of the usual procedures that lead to conviction or exoneration in the courts of law. A grand jury investigation of this secret police unit is definitely in order. I am a retired Los Angeles County deputy probation officer.

When the sound of gunfire shattered the peace of morning prayer Thursday at a North Hollywood synagogue, the shock waves traveled fast and far. Was it a hate crime? An act of terrorism? An isolated incident or part of a wider plot? These were all real fears in a city where, 10 years ago, a white supremacist gunman terrorized a Jewish preschool and murdered a postal carrier, and where police have been on alert for acts of terror since Sept. 11, 2001. By day's end, authorities had come to believe that the shooting, in which two men were wounded, was probably a far more mundane crime.
