Thousands of strikers at Brazil's biggest steel mill on Thursday staged a violent demonstration to protest the deaths of five workers after 800 army troops moved in to try to end a three-day walkout. At least 43 people, including three soldiers, were wounded in the army's assault late Wednesday night on the government-owned National Steel Co. in Volta Redonda, about 100 miles west of Rio.

Five men wielding revolvers opened fire on a group of street youths sleeping on a broad plaza in the heart of downtown Rio de Janeiro early Friday, killing seven. A 16-year-old boy, one of two who were wounded but survived, told police and reporters that the gunmen sped up to the square in a taxicab and a beige Chevette sedan, leaped to the pavement and without a word of warning fired at point-blank range into a group of about 30 youths.

Federal police in Brazil raided a cattle ranch in the western Amazon and arrested two brothers in connection with the slaying of famed ecologist Francisco Mendes, officials said. Aleci and Oloci Alves da Silva were captured after a gun battle with police at their ranch in Xapuri, the jungle town where Mendes was gunned down last week, Deputy Minister of Justice Luis Fernando Eichenberg said.
