About 600 Turkish Cypriots rallied to demand the removal of the Austrian commander of the U.N. peacekeeping force on the divided island after a U.N. soldier killed a Turkish Cypriot. After a religious service for slain farmer Hussein Kafa, protesters burned an effigy of Maj. Gen. Gunther Greindl, the commander of the 2,300-member U.N. force. According to the U.N. force, Kafa crossed into its zone of operations in the village of Pyla on May 21, claiming he wanted to mend a wall.

Gunmen from the Greek Cypriot side of this divided island opened fire on Turkish Cypriot sentries near Famagusta, killing one and wounding another, Turkish Cypriot officials said. Rauf R. Denktash, president of the breakaway republic on the Turkish Cypriot north side of the island, called the shooting an act of revenge for the deaths of two Greek Cypriots killed by Turks or Turkish Cypriots last month. Government spokesman Yannakis Cassoulides denied involvement by Greek Cypriot forces.

Two masked men in a car riddled a British military vehicle with machine-gun fire Monday, seriously wounding a serviceman and a 16-year-old British girl, police and British officials said. Authorities said the gunmen escaped. The attack was the first against British personnel on the island since an Arab terrorist raid on a British base last year.

Three heavily armed Palestinians seized an Israeli yacht in a Yom Kippur attack at a Cyprus marina today and killed a woman and two men before surrendering. Police said an Israeli woman dressed in a nightgown and armed with a knife was shot to death in a fierce fight with the gunmen shortly after they boarded the yacht at the Larnaca marina about 4:30 a.m.
