Two young men were shot to death early Sunday in a volley of gunfire from a military-type assault weapon at El Salvador Park--a little more than a mile from police headquarters. Ernesto Sanudo Mendez and Sammy Porras, both 21, were walking in the 1800 block of Civic Center Drive about 1:45 a.m. when they were gunned down by shots fired from a passing car. Police said it was another gang-related shooting. Residents of the Civic Center area said it was another outrage.

Two years have passed since her son Brandon was shot dead while pulling a Halloween prank in Buena Park, and Jessie Ketsdever still can't bring herself to visit his grave--much less refer to it as such. "Don't call it a burial site," Ketsdever said through tears recently, her voice half-pleading, half-scolding. "It's a property site. . . . My son's not gone yet."

Sen Nguyen lived a mother's nightmare. Her 13-year-old daughter, Phuong Nguyen, was near death this week after two bullets allegedly fired by a reputed gang member at the Westminster Mall struck her in the back. "Doctors kept telling me at first there might not be any hope for her, and I was afraid every time the phone rang," Nguyen said Friday. "But I came in to see her (Thursday afternoon), and she opened her eyes to look at me. That's when I knew she will live."

An argument between friends turned deadly Friday evening, when a young man shot a visitor in a Santa Ana apartment complex, police said. Reyes Hernandez, 23, was shot multiple times just before 6 p.m. and died. Daniel Alvarez, 19, was arrested on suspicion of murder Friday evening after a brief search by authorities. Hernandez had been visiting Alvarez at his apartment in the 600 block of South Fairview Street, Santa Ana police said.

May 28, 1988--Cornelia Mitchell, 82, of Buena Park was fatally shot by a bullet that pierced her home in what police said was gunfire from gang members, who were shooting at a rival gang member running past her home. July 3, 1988--Aburto Olympo, 18, of Santa Ana was killed and three people were injured after a gang-related argument erupted into gunfire in a parking lot at Centennial Regional Park in Santa Ana.

An argument between two groups of youths in Disneyland's parking lot led to an early morning brawl Saturday in which a 15-year-old boy was shot to death and a teen-age bystander wounded, police said. An 18-year-old Santa Ana man, identified as Keleti Naea, was arrested on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail Saturday at the Anaheim city jail. Anaheim Police Lt. Chet Barry said the fatal shooting took place shortly after 12:50 a.m.

A midday shootout in a jewelry and fabric store Friday between robbers and an employee who surprised them Friday left one suspect dead and another in critical condition. Police spokesman Robin Kapp said two men, armed with small-caliber, semiautomatic handguns, entered the Thanh Minh store in Little Saigon around 11:40 a.m. and forced a 61-year-old employee to a back office, where they began tying her up with duct tape.

One man was wounded and dozens of panicked customers fled when a gunman opened fire in a coffee shop Friday evening, witnesses and authorities said Saturday. The shooting was the latest attack in a Vietnamese cafe in the Little Saigon area, where three people were killed and eight others wounded during a four-month period earlier this year. Police refused to release the name of the victim in Friday night's attack, but said he was in stable condition at a local hospital. Sgt.

An employee of a jewelry store in the Westminster Mall was shot during a daring robbery attempt shortly before closing time Friday night, police said. Four suspects were arrested. The wounded employee was taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center for treatment, Westminster Police Lt. Bob Burnett said. The man's identity and his condition was not immediately available. The shooting occurred about 8:47 p.m.

A 19-year-old Santa Ana man was found guilty Monday of four counts of attempted murder for shooting and seriously wounding a 13-year-old girl last summer in front of terrified shoppers at the Westminster Mall. Phong Thanh Dang, who was a student at La Quinta High School at the time of the July 8, 1993, shooting, sat without expression as a clerk announced the verdict of an Orange County Superior Court jury.

A 19-year-old man who allegedly tried to rob two couples at gunpoint early Friday was fatally shot after the would-be victims drew weapons of their own, police said. Juan Carlos Diaz of Santa Ana died from gunshot wounds at UCI Medical Center in Orange. Police said Diaz and another man approached two couples on Rosewood Street about 1 a.m. and asked for cigarettes. Diaz and the other suspect then pulled handguns and demanded money, said Officer Mario Carona.

A 27-year-old woman died Monday after being shot at a Laguna Niguel shooting range. Sheriff's investigators said the shooting was being investigated as a possible accident or suicide. "We just don't know," said Lt. Mark Billings, a sheriff's spokesman. The shooting occurred about 8:45 p.m. after the woman, whose identity has not been released, walked into the On Target Indoor Range on Camino Capistrano.

A Santa Ana gang member was convicted Friday of attempted murder in the shooting of an Anaheim police officer, a verdict that was greeted by a hushed courtroom packed with police and well-wishers. Officer Thomas "Kasey" Geary, who has returned to patrol duties since last year's shooting, at first struggled to choke back tears as the verdict was read. Then he lifted his head, smiled at the prosecutor and winked.

Police late Thursday were trying to identify a man found shot to death in an alley behind a tire store earlier in the day. The man, described as white, 25 to 30 years old with closely cropped, dark hair and several tattoos, was discovered shortly after 2 p.m. behind the Discount Tire at 301 W. A 15-year-old Garden Grove boy and his father have been arrested in connection with a June 19 shooting that killed an Anaheim teenager, authorities said Tuesday. The youth, whose name was withheld because of his age, was charged with murder in the shooting of Benjamin Escobar, 16. The boy's father, Salvador Munoz Gutierrez, 50, was charged with being an accessory by helping the 15-year-old escape.

Donnie Moore had been around professional baseball for more than a decade. He struck out almost 400 major league hitters and saved 85 games. But his career, and perhaps his life, was reduced to one batter, one pitch that would haunt him for the rest of his life. Moore died Tuesday, after shooting his wife and then turning the gun on himself, according to police. He was 35. For two seasons, Moore pitched relief for the Angels as no one had before him.

A teenage driver who died Tuesday after being shot by a pedestrian was identified as Benjamin Escobar, 16, of Anaheim, police said. Escobar and two companions were driving on Dale Street in Garden Grove about 5:30 p.m. when they got into an argument with two teens walking on the street. One pedestrian shot Escobar and one of his companions, police said. The car struck a tree and overturned. Names of Escobar's two companions were not released because of their ages.
