A 13-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Monday after police said she grabbed her father's gun and fired at least three shots at schoolmates outside her apartment complex. None of the gunshots hit anyone, and deputies chased down the girl in a nearby arroyo and arrested her without further shooting. The girl was not identified because she is a juvenile.

Two teenage boys were shot to death and a third seriously injured at three separate parties in Ventura County over the weekend, bringing to 39 the number of homicides in the county since the start of the year. There were a total of 23 homicides last year. "We've had more homicides countywide this year than in previous years past, and that's very alarming," Santa Paula Police Chief Bob Gonzales said. An out-of-work computer engineer with a history of grudges against government opened fire without warning in an unemployment office here Thursday, killing three people and later fatally shooting a police officer before he was gunned down at another unemployment office in the neighboring city of Ventura, authorities said. The gunman, who also wounded four people, was identified by the Ventura County coroner's office as Alan Winterbourne, 33, of Ventura, a man known for his contentiousness.

The suspect in a shooting rampage that devastated a Simi Valley family apparently turned his gun on himself Friday afternoon as police pursued him through rugged back country about 30 miles north of Ojai. Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez, a 35-year-old Caltrans engineer, was found dead near a Los Padres National Forest campground about 5 p.m. with a gunshot wound to the head, Ventura County authorities said.

Police have arrested three alleged gang members who are suspects in a Sunday night drive-by shooting that left one Oxnard man critically injured and another with bullet wounds in his legs. One man from Pacoima and two juveniles were arrested Monday afternoon by Los Angeles police. The three, who were driving a gray 1979 Honda Accord that authorities say was used in the shooting, were transported to the Oxnard police station late Monday night.

A Santa Paula man convicted in the murder of his cousin was ordered to prison Friday for 25 years to life, despite protests by his attorney that sentencing should be delayed until the defendant's brother--the alleged killer--is brought to trial. A gunfight between rival gangs erupted during a birthday party in a quiet Thousand Oaks neighborhood just before midnight Saturday, leaving one teen-ager dead and three wounded, sheriff's deputies said. The brawl spilled over from a back-yard patio on Fordham Avenue to the parking lot of Los Robles Regional Medical Center, where keyed-up gang members confronted and threatened one another, witnesses said. About 40 sheriff's deputies were sent to the hospital to prevent further violence.

Meanwhile, a funeral was held Saturday for Felipe Ramirez, 17, who was fatally shot Tuesday in what was believed to be a gang-related attack.

A 17-year-old Thousand Oaks boy who allegedly killed his girlfriend while brandishing a handgun was charged with murder Friday by prosecutors who said he should have known the potentially fatal consequences of his actions. But in an unusual move, prosecutors will not seek to have the youth tried as an adult, citing his lack of criminal history and their belief that he did not intend to kill the girl, Jacqueline Reay, 16.

Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez pulled in front of the two-story Simi Valley home, according to police, and hurried to an open garage door in a desperate search for his ex-girlfriend. The ex-girlfriend's 16-year-old brother met Rodriguez as he stepped into the garage Wednesday afternoon. Without a word, Rodriguez allegedly pulled out a handgun and opened fire, hitting the brother in the right thigh.

A gunman who apparently knew his victims walked into a Simi Valley home Wednesday and opened fire throughout the house, killing a grandmother and two young children and injuring three others. Those killed were Espiranza Martinez, age not given; Ricardo Calderon, 12; and Chantel Rios, 5, police said late Wednesday. Martinez was Calderon's grandmother.

A La Conchita man was in custody Sunday after he allegedly fired a handgun into a crowd of party-goers behind his Ojai Avenue home, wounding a Santa Barbara resident in the neck. Donald Watton, 64, was booked on suspicion of assault with a firearm and felony unlawful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence after the Saturday night incident, said Eric Nishimoto, a Ventura County Sheriff's Department spokesman. Mark Mosby, 20, was shot in the neck about 11:30 p.m., Nishimoto said.

A cousin of an Oxnard man convicted in a 1997 killing testified that another relative admitted just after the slaying to having fired the fatal shots. Rudy Ramos is a cousin through marriage both to Efren Cruz, who was convicted of the Santa Barbara shooting, and to 28-year-old Gerardo Reyes, the man defense attorneys believe is responsible for the slaying.

As detectives continued their search for two gunmen in a deadly Friday afternoon market robbery, one of the survivors was taken off the critical list Saturday.
