It was open season on shopping malls throughout Ventura County on Friday as thousands of bargain-hungry shopaholics and Christmas-list early birds took to the streets in vigorous fashion--returning home with weary legs and considerably lighter wallets. "I was at The Oaks mall at 7:30 this morning," said Anke Bode of Camarillo, combing the racks at Off Fifth, the new Saks Fifth Avenue outlet at the Camarillo Factory Stores. "I had to go home for more money."

It could not compare to their excursions to flashy Las Vegas or the quaint town of Solvang, but Oxnard City Council members seemed delighted with a bus tour of the Wal-Mart in Palmdale and other hot shopping spots in Southern California. The five council members, accompanied by eight city staff members, spent 12 hours on a chartered bus during the decidedly unglamorous outing. The cities on the tour--Riverside, Palmdale and Victorville--may not be known as exciting locales.

The owners of the landmark Farmers Market in Los Angeles are expected to announce today that they have teamed up with a local developer to build a sprawling, $100-million shopping and entertainment complex alongside the historic market. The open-air project--which will include 640,000 square feet of high-end shops, restaurants, movie theaters and offices--is one of the largest developments to be proposed in the city since the real estate market went bust in the early 1990s.
