While many African countries are not involved in the Gulf War, three of the continent's most impoverished states have joined the allies on the front line: Sierra Leone's 130-member Gulf contingent, including 30 medical personnel, spent a month waiting in the capital of Freetown until the government could gather sufficient funds to send them. Senegal's 500-strong force has been guarding holy sites in Saudi Arabia and plans to join any ground attack. Niger has contributed 500 soldiers.
