USC quarterback Max Wittek, who grew up in Connecticut and played Pop Warner football with Silas Redd, called the Penn State running back this week to encourage him to join the Trojans. Wittek, a redshirt freshman, said he spoke with Redd after the NCAA handed down sanctions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal that allow Penn State players to transfer without penalty. “I told him I was sorry to hear about everything that came down and that it was obviously a difficult situation,” Wittek said.

Marqise Lee will probably decide whether to make himself available for the NFL draft or return to USC about a week after the Trojans play in the Las Vegas Bowl, the junior receiver said Sunday. USC plays Fresno State on Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium. "Probably the week after that Saturday, I'll probably decide what I'm going to do," he said. Lee, who won the 2012 Biletnikoff Award, is expected to turn pro despite being slowed and sidelined this season because of injuries.

USC running back Silas Redd, Coach Lane Kiffin and the school dismissed a report linking rapper Snoop Dogg to Redd's recruitment by the Trojans after Penn State was hit with NCAA sanctions. Pennlive.com reported Tuesday that in a forthcoming book -- "Fourth and Long: The Fight for the Soul of College Football" -- author John U. Bacon reveals that Snoop Dogg, now known as Snoop Lion, was waiting for Redd in a limousine when the player traveled to Los Angeles to visit USC. "I've never met Snoop Dogg in my life, much less been in his limo," Redd said Tuesday.

USC tailback Silas Redd is expected to sit out the Las Vegas Bowl because of a knee injury and tailback Tre Madden could be a game-time decision because of an ankle injury, interim Coach Clay Helton said Saturday. Neither Redd nor Madden practiced as the Trojans resumed workouts after three days off for finals. USC plays Fresno State next Saturday. Redd, a senior, led the Trojans in rushing in 2012 but suffered a left knee injury during spring practice. He was sidelined for much of the first part of the season while recovering from surgeries.

USC tailback Silas Redd gained zero yards in 10 carries last week against Utah. So the senior felt much better on Friday night after rushing for 140 yards in 22 carries during the Trojans' 31-14 victory over Oregon State at Reser Stadium. Redd sat out much of the season while trying to come back from knee surgery. He carried the Trojans in the fourth quarter in a victory over Arizona on Oct. 10 and ran for 112 yards in a loss at Notre Dame before he was stifled by Utah. Third-year sophomore Javorius Allen rushed for 133 yards and scored three touchdowns against Oregon State, but Redd also was instrumental in wearing down the Beavers.

Silas Redd's slow recovery from knee surgery puts the spotlight on USC tailbacks Tre Madden and Justin Davis heading into Thursday's opener at Hawaii. Redd, the Trojans' leading rusher last season, said on his Twitter feed Monday night that he would not travel to Honolulu with the Trojans. Junior D.J. Morgan also has not been able to participate in contact drills and is expected to remain home when the Trojans depart after practice Tuesday afternoon. That leaves the Trojans with only one tailback who has carried the ball in a college game: sophomore Javorius Allen, who rushed for 32 yards in six carries last season.

USC tailback Silas Redd said Wednesday that he was cleared to play and that he intends to make his season debut against Arizona. Redd, a senior, led the Trojans with 905 yards rushing last season. He suffered a knee injury during spring practice and has undergone two surgical procedures. Redd traveled with the team to last week's game at Arizona State. He warmed up but did not play in the Trojans' 62-41 loss. "I just have to ease into these things," Redd said. The loss triggered the firing of USC Coach Lane Kiffin, marking another turn in Redd's career.

SEATTLE - USC running back Silas Redd rushed for more than 100 yards for the third time this season in USC's 24-14 victory over Washington on Saturday at CenturyLink Field. Redd, a junior transfer from Penn State, gained 155 yards and a touchdown in 22 carries. "I thought he had a real good day," Coach Lane Kiffin said. "He took care of the football and ran hard, which is exactly what we told him we're going to need on the road. " Redd started the game with a 57-yard run. He took a handoff from quarterback Matt Barkley, and ran to his left but appeared to be stopped at the line of scrimmage.

USC's football team, already considered a national championship contender, got stronger Tuesday with the addition of running back Silas Redd, who announced he would transfer from Penn State and join the Trojans. Redd, who rushed for 1,241 yards and seven touchdowns in 244 carries last season, will be eligible immediately in the wake of NCAA sanctions against Penn State that give every Nittany Lions player the opportunity to transfer without having to sit out a season. Redd, a junior, said in a statement that he considered USC "the best fit for my academic, athletic and personal needs over the next two years.

USC's plan was simple: Give the ball to Silas Redd. Last Thursday against Arizona, the Trojans were backed up to their four-yard line with a seven-point lead and just over four minutes remaining. Offensive coordinator Clay Helton was calling plays for the Trojans for the first time. But he never deviated. He called on Redd. Seven consecutive times. "That's a very seasoned vet who's been in that situation before," Helton said. "It was Silas' time. " Redd's final carry - a 10-yard gain on a third-and-eight play - enabled USC to run out the clock in the final minute.

Lane Kiffin is no longer USC's coach, but he has an opinion about who should be his permanent replacement. "That's easy. That's already done. It should be Ed Orgeron," Kiffin said Thursday during a radio interview on KSPN-AM (710). Orgeron has guided the Trojans to a 5-1 record since Athletic Director Pat Haden named him interim coach after firing Kiffin on Sept. 29. The No. 23 Trojans, who are 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the Pac-12 Conference, play at Colorado on Saturday.

USC quarterback Cody Kessler had another efficient performance Saturday in USC's 62-28 victory over California at Memorial Stadium. Kessler completed 14 of 17 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Kessler's screen pass to Silas Redd in the first quarter resulted in a 12-yard touchdown that gave USC a 14-0 lead. Tailback Javorius Allen caught a short pass from Kessler and turned it into a 57-yard scoring play. “It's nice when you can throw a four-yard pass and you have athletes like that, that can take it 50-plus” yards, Kessler said.

All the usual good-game indicators went out the window for California at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Golden Bears ran nearly 100 plays without a turnover, had 483 total yards, and held a time-of-possession edge over USC of more than 11 minutes. And got crushed, 62-28 -- the most points scored by the Trojans since they defeated Washington State, 69-0, on Oct. 18, 2008. Josh Shaw also scored on a blocked punt as USC tied the NCAA record for most punts returned for touchdowns in game. The returns helped USC extend its win streak against Cal to 10 games.

Although USC's passing attack has come under fire for falling below expectations, the Trojans' running game is developing into a fairly consistent asset. Penn State transfer Silas Redd has rushed for more than 100 yards three times and has averaged 95 yards a game, which ranks fifth in the Pac-12 Conference. The No. 11 Trojans, who play Colorado on Saturday at the Coliseum, have averaged 165.7 yards rushing a game. That's 34 more than at the same point last season and three more than their 2011 average.

USC clearly looks like a different team under interim Coach Ed Orgeron. The Trojans won their third consecutive Pac-12 Conference game -- their first at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore., since 2004 -- by dominating Oregon State in every phase, 31-14. Even the much-maligned USC secondary played well, picking off three Sean Mannion passes as the Trojans defense gave up only one touchdown. The interceptions were made by Josh Shaw, Dion Bailey and Kevon Seymour.

CORVALLIS, Ore.  -- USC tailback Javorius Allen ran off the practice field last week holding a football. Allen had dropped the ball on one of his two carries against Utah, losing opportunities to show the progress he has made as a third-year sophomore. He told himself he would not waste another chance. On Friday night at Reser Stadium, Allen seized the moment, rushing for three touchdowns in the Trojans' 31-14 victory over Oregon State. Allen scored on runs of nine, 18 and 52 yards as the Trojans won at Reser Stadium for the first time since 2004.
