It's quite a beautiful house. Original marble tile in the bathrooms, circa 1926, four bedrooms, terraced lawn. But the view - the view of Silver Lake Reservoir is priceless. Well, this one is nearly $1.4 million. Realtors Dan Ortega and Jovelle Narcise held an open house recently at the West Silver Lake Drive property. As strangers mixed with visiting neighbors, a young couple chatted about the latest question facing the community: dig or drain? In these hills northwest of Dodger Stadium, it is a no-win situation.

In an effort to increase their visibility in Echo Park and Silver Lake, Los Angeles police officers are patrolling the area on bicycle. Northeast Division officers Joe Writer and Ray Garcia are riding through the areas once a week and plan to increase the frequency of the patrols. The days and times of the patrols vary. Pioneer Market has donated office space at their Sunset Boulevard store to police.

A 17-year-old student was stabbed in the back Tuesday during a gang-related brawl at John Marshall High School in the Los Feliz-Silver Lake area, Los Angeles police said. A fellow male student was charged with the stabbing, and two others were arrested on other charges arising from fights that day at the school. Evan Harris, the stabbing victim, was reported in satisfactory condition and recovering from the knife wound at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.

A Silver Lake man who went into his backyard to investigate a hissing sound was electrocuted this morning by a downed power line, and his wife was burned trying to save him, authorities said. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was killed at 5:23 a.m. when he stepped on the wire, apparently knocked to the ground by a falling palm frond, at his home in the 800 block of North Silver Lake Boulevard, Los Angeles fire spokesman Jim Wells said.

A tribute to award-winning songwriter Paul Williams is slated for Aug. 15 at Spaceland, 1717 Silver Lake Blvd., Los Angeles. The event will feature performances by the Oscar and Grammy Award winner as well as by the Wondermints, the Negro Problem, the Mello Cads and others performing their renditions of Williams' songs. Net proceeds from the show will benefit the Musicians' Assistance Program, a drug and alcohol recovery organization for music industry professionals. Tickets are $10 at the door.

An elderly woman was found stabbed to death, apparently after withdrawing money from a bank in Silver Lake, Los Angeles police said Saturday. The body of Frances Uyeda, 74, was found by family members slumped over in the front seat of her car about 10 p.m. Friday, according to LAPD Sgt. Zimmie Williams. Police said they believed the motive was robbery. Williams said that family members had earlier reported the woman missing, saying that she had left home about 10 a.m.

Investigators are looking for a relative in connection with the killings of two men whose bodies were found Tuesday morning buried behind a home near Silver Lake, Los Angeles police said. The victims' identities were withheld pending notification of family. But Los Angeles Police Department Officer Sam Park identified the suspect as 21-year-old Ronald Mendez, the son and nephew of the dead men. Mendez is considered armed and dangerous and might be driving a beige 1986 four-door Mercedes-Benz, license plate 5DJW317, Park said.
