Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has decided to move his family out of their Silver Lake home and into Getty House, the official residence for the city's mayor, a representative said Friday. Garcetti spokesman Yusef Robb said the mayor's family hopes to finish moving into the 8,076-square-foot English Tudor-style mansion in Windsor Square by the end of the year. Garcetti spent much of the past decade living in Echo Park, relocating his family to Silver Lake in 2011. Amy Wakeland, Garcetti's wife, told Windsor Square neighbors of the planned move at a meeting Thursday night, Robb said.

In its recent ranking of popular spots, CNN's business website called Silver Lake the nation's second-best big city neighborhood. It's "a haven for families as well as hipsters ... packed with shops and hotspots, defying the 'no walking in L.A.' cliche. " There is indeed plenty of walking on Silver Lake's main drag, but that's because there's practically nowhere to park along that busy stretch of Sunset Boulevard. Look up the hill along Hyperion Avenue and you'll see those visitors' cars - hogging spots that local residents have long considered theirs.

In the moments after Assemblyman Mike Gatto learned that his father had been shot to death in a family home in Silver Lake on Wednesday night, the Democrat put in frantic a call to a longtime friend. Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino, a former Los Angeles police officer, said Gatto called him after his father, 78-year-old Joseph Gatto, was found dead about 8:15 p.m. Buscaino, who described the Gatto clan as being like family, said he immediately notified City Council President Herb Wesson and Mayor Eric Garcetti, who lives in the same Silver Lake neighborhood where Joseph Gatto was killed.
