Eric Beteille captured this colorful image at the corner of Silver Lake and Sunset boulevards on Nov. 13. His impression is that the intersection is becoming a cultural bookend for the neighborhood similar to nearby Sunset Junction. Beteille used a Nikon D700.  Each week, we're featuring photos of Southern California submitted by readers. Re "Silver Lake evolution lures newcomers, worries locals," Nov. 16 I find it amusing that residents now long for some golden old days of Silver Lake. When we built a house in 1991 two blocks from the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Hyperion Avenue, my partner and I spent every Saturday getting up at 7 a.m. to paint over gang graffiti, pick up trash in the streets and water some of the two-dozen trees we persuaded neighbors to plant. Our new house overlooked a previously private corner, and we soon discovered we had to shine lights to drive away the cars in which local prostitutes serviced clients.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has decided to move his family out of their Silver Lake home and into Getty House, the official residence for the city's mayor, a representative said Friday. Garcetti spokesman Yusef Robb said the mayor's family hopes to finish moving into the 8,076-square-foot English Tudor-style mansion in Windsor Square by the end of the year. Garcetti spent much of the past decade living in Echo Park, relocating his family to Silver Lake in 2011. Amy Wakeland, Garcetti's wife, told Windsor Square neighbors of the planned move at a meeting Thursday night, Robb said.

In its recent ranking of popular spots, CNN's business website called Silver Lake the nation's second-best big city neighborhood. It's "a haven for families as well as hipsters ... packed with shops and hotspots, defying the 'no walking in L.A.' cliche. " There is indeed plenty of walking on Silver Lake's main drag, but that's because there's practically nowhere to park along that busy stretch of Sunset Boulevard. Look up the hill along Hyperion Avenue and you'll see those visitors' cars - hogging spots that local residents have long considered theirs.
